I know Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has been mentioned several times already...(not only for the car and various Heath Robinson type inventions but also Baron Bomburst's air ship and Dick Van Dyke wearing goggles at one point) but let's not forget one particular image of Lionel Jeffries in khaki and a pith helmet hanging below the Airship! |

Oh. My. Gods. Are you kidding me? If there weren't an ocean and a continent between us, I would so be in! By the by, how does one set up for a Shadow Cast production? Do you just show the film guerilla-style, from DVD, or do you have to contact the copyright holders and show it on a real cinema projector? Also, what are you planning SFX-wise? I'm thinking the throat-slitting and organ removal bits here. And where are you showing it? Are you doing it in an established cinema, and if so, are you using a stage, and if so, how are you getting it in there? With all the seats there, I mean. If not in a cinema, then where? Is there a Starter's Guide for Repo! Shadow Casts floating somewhere about the Internet? Sorry. I just mobbed you with way off topic questions. But, ah, I get so excited about these things! |

i would have to say repo is actually at teh bottom ofalot of lists i have but thas mainyl casue well they tried to apss it off to the goth community as it having "goth" music in it and really the whole thing were teh girl throws the tantrum in her bedroom and sings that avril lavigneesque punk pop song made me shudder quite a bit ..I was disspointed that joan jett made guest apperance in the movie and didnt have any actual lines.  and ive met Joan before shes awesome. I really did like Steamboy alot especially since it featured one of the great exhibitions ( which later became worlds fairs) with the crystal palace in it ,,, i have a few books from the era on these and its rather fascinateting althugh its abit frustrating when you find out you only have one volume of a 3 volume 120+ year old book set. I know probaly no one has said this casue well its an extremely cheesy movie but i liked the Abominable Doctor Phibes. casue well hes got a clockwork band , awesome evil villian lair with pipe organ ( which glows for some reason and looks likeit came out of a rollerdisco hall), plus well hes gota speach device made out of a phonograph, he kills a guy with a freezing machine and this all seems to happen during late edwardian early georgian england. Admittidly the colors are a bit gawdy but it was the 70s what doyo expect. oh also virgina north is in it and i think it was her last movie and shes got theat erie " i know her from somewhere " vibe. |

It's been mentioned briefly a couple of times before, but I'd like to make another mention of "Topsy-Turvy". A Mike Leigh film about Gilbert and Sullivan.
It's not Steampunk per se -- but it is DEAD ON TARGET as far as the art direction and costumes, vis a vis Victorian London. But what's especially great about it is the LANGUAGE. Whoever wrote the script had an amazing grasp for how people talked in Victorian times. The vocabulary, the slang, the jokes. For this aspect alone it's priceless. It's one of my all time faves!

I know probaly no one has said this casue well its an extremely cheesy movie but i liked the Abominable Doctor Phibes Both the Dr Phibes movies are brilliant..as you say..clockwork band..elaborate pipe organ..the gramophone 'voice box'..all the brassy do-dads and gizmos. Yes, it's camper than a scout jamboree but beautiful to look at. Time frame's a little late for Steampunk though..set, as it is, in the Art Deco world of the early 1930's |

. The soundtrack is very hummable as well. Sadly, my copy of The General has had Scott Joplin rags dubbed over the top! It really takes a lot away from the film when Buster's girlfriend is being abducted by Union soldiers and instead of emotive, appropriate music to highten the action it has the music most associated with 'The Sting' playing over the top. |
