I don't know if anyone has mentioned it already but I've always thought that the Japanese film 'Casshern' would be classed as steampunk. Yes there is the element of pure manga in there, especially with the main hero, but other elements I would categorise as steampunk. If I'm wrong I would like to point out that I'm new to this so please be kind Smiley

How DARE you!!! Just kidding. We're a pretty friendly bunch.
I can't say that I've ever seen that one, but I can say this...

I've just started watching the TV adaption of Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic. Definitely steampunk elements to some of the props and clothing (I'm thinking the Assassin's weaponry etc).

I think we can all agree that most H.G. Wells and Jules Verne adaptations qualify...

I tend to think of "Zeppelin" with Michael York and Elkie Sommers as steampunk...

and I definitely support the choice of "Those Magnificent Young Men in Their Flying Machines" The interesting thing you learn from the DVD commentary, is that all of the whacky designs for aircraft in that film were based on actual, patented designs!

In a similar vein, you might include "Theose Fantastic Flying Fools" which was a sort of "Earth to the Moon" knockoff, with Burl Ives and Lionel Jeffries and Terry Thomas.

"Rescue of the Castaways" from Disney...

"Mysterious Island" with special effects by Ray Harrayhausen! Civil War era science fiction at it's best!

"The 7 Percent Solution"

"Robot Carnival" A japanese anime "jam" film, with several producers contributing shorts on the theme of robots. The opening and closing segments (involving a titanic clockwork killer glockenshphiel), "Presence", "Franken's Gears", and "Tale of Two Robots" are all deliciously steampunk! (Buy it, if you find a copy!)

More as I think about it....

Oh. I don't know if music videos count... but you might want to wander over to Youtube, and punch up "Kate Bush-Cloudbusting." The song is based on the story of mad social scientist, and rainmaker, Willhelm Reich who believed he had discovered "Orgone" an energy feild created by all living things. The Orgone surrounds us and binds us... (well, you get the idea...) Oddly enough, the government seized his research, banned his books and had as much of it destroyed as they could.

But the video is wonderfully, deeply steampunk. Starring both Kater herself, and Donald Sutherland.

Not sure if its been mentioned, but the Disney film 'Treasure Plannet' was pretty good... or at least I thought so X3.

The assassin from the first Hellboy film was also amazing, and the final fight in the second film was in a heavily steamy area.

Just saw a bizarre bizarre film called...Perverella. Now it was bad , mad and just plain weird. BUT it had such a steampunk look to it...think victorian meets 60s psychedelia.

if you do wish to watch that..i warn you...most of the time youd be watching it with mouth agape!..oh and try to spot cameos by Johnathan Ross and Mark Lamar

Oh! One that I don't think has been mentioned yet:

A fantastic Victorian era airship that travels across deepest, darkest unexplored Africa, encountering adventures in the Saharan desert, the forbidden city of Timbuktu, and passing themselves off as "moon Gods" to the natives, all on a mission to "beat the rotter slavers from planting their flag first" on the unclaimed territory on the far side of the Volta River...  A wild adventure of animals, steam powered balloons, pith helmets, stiff upper lip Brit generals, escaped slave girls, and daring rescues....

"Five Weeks In a Balloon"

A second film I thought of is one I haven't seen since it was first released in the late 1970's, early 80's... so I'm not sure how well it holds upt to Steampunk criteria, but I remember it being pre- WWI, and an adventure in an ERB-style lost world... "Warlords of Atlantis" (From Amicus, the same nice folks who brought us "The Land That Time Forgot")

Great music video and long enough to be a short film.

I would certainly agree that there is a lot in the movie with Steampunk aspects for buildings with mechanical workings and cogs sticking out of them to rather clockwork looking robots, alongside a huge amount of anime, cyberpunk and a fair few other awesome styles Casshern is really chock full of style. Cheesy

As for possibly being wrong don't worry, what's important is that it is steampunk to YOU. Though steampunk is becoming more defined by the media and general public (like unfortunatly happened to cyberpunk), steampunk in reality is whatever you want it to be. Smiley

You should see it. It's superb, though the plot totally falls apart at the end. I wouldn't say it's very steampunk though, more dystopian cyberpunk, really, though there's definitely some steampunk influence there.

I would add to this the anime series Last Exile.

I purchased Mutant Chronicles today and was amazed at how steamy some aspects of it where. The military uniforms are very WWI, the weapons are very bulk and GORRAM COAL POWERED SPACE SHIP THINGS!

So glad Magnusmagic mentioned The Young Sherlock Holmes Smiley and that Return to Oz was mentioned.

Did anyone ever see the cartoon of The Phantom Tollbooth, there were some elements there, with the 'Watch' dog! Also Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, especially the balloon/airship chase at the end followed by the fight on the cogs in Big Ben!!Not to mention the mechanical Queen Victoria!!!

I may have mentioned this before, but you all may want to try "The Assassination Bureau, Ltd.", starring Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg.  Based on an unfinished work by Jack London.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but i feel like Dead Man fits the idea of an idealized depiction of the victorian/wild west periods.  And even if it doesn't, well, its a damn fine film.

I'm going to give a mention for Return to Oz. It's got a mechanical man (Tick Tock):

Maniacal creatures with wheels for hands and feet, travelling around by rolling around on their wheels (Wheelers):

Bits of anachronisms all over the place, though that's likely to be due to being set in Oz.

good call Im quite fond of that film; i love tick tock
