The problem with the West Shore is that the prices are high due to the proximity to Gettysburg, the same is true of the area directly around Hershey. If you go a few miles beyond, let's say into Lemoyne, PA, or cross the river and go to Middletown, PA and Hummelstown, PA, the prices drop enough that you can make some really decent finds. I have seen quite a few good deals at Antiques Marketplace in Lemoyne (I am there this weekend), Saturday's Market in Middletown, PA, Olde Factory in Hummelstown, PA, Crossroads in Hershey, PA, and Ziegler's in the Country in Hershey, PA. (Ziegler's is where I picked up my 1858 dated Samovar for $25, it is worth closer to $500)
Now if you are sticking in the Gettysburg area, there is a really nice surplus shop on the Maryland end, just off 15. A good place to look for jackets and such to mod, I like it because it has a very wide selection and the prices are not too bad.

Picked up a little gear wheel today...  Well - actually it is not that little really.  It is in fact a four foot diameter wooden pattern for a gear wheel. Nice. Very nice ... I need a gear that size. Putting a Rube-Goldburg-ish set of locks on the inside of my garage back door. That could be the drive wheel to operate the dead-bolts, Where is it,and what do you want for it.? Oh.... sorry wrong thread. |

Another successful foray on Ford car Boot Sale this past weekend. I got myself a couple of nice cravat pins and a paisly bow tie and The Countess picked up a pair of vintage sunglasses..small ovel lenses, wire frames but with the little protective mesh at the edge of each lens. Came in their original (if somewhat tatty) leather case..£10. I also picked up (in an Oxfam Shop) a tweed huntin' 'n' shootin' waist coat that does right up to the neck with a round mandarin type collar* in the same Gun Club Check Tweed pattern as the plus fours I bought in Camden months ago! £10
* I've since discovered it's actually called 'a gilet' (pronounced Jill-ay, apparently)

A pair of candle sconces about a foot long good heavy brass £2.50  A quartz clock, but the case appears to be thick brass not plastic. £1.00  Looks like the back of a mantle clock and an empty pocket watch case. £1.00  |

I've been meaning to move my desk out of storage and into the master bedroom. It was going to be a teensy bit too big for comfort so I began the search for a more compact, yet real wood alternative. Nothing much turned up that was a good match for our home. After a recent brain storm... well a sudden squall at least... I began looking for a defunct pump organ. I didn't want a pristine example, nor one that was potentially worthy of a restoration. I picked this beauty up off craigslist for a paltry 25$.  It has been the victim of a rather hasty and poorly done restoration to make it presentable. After opening it up I discovered that rats, had been at the workings, not to mention the ravages of time and inexpert repairs. Even with all the holes in the bellows sealed and feeding it with air from a leaf blower/shop vac I could not get it to utter much more than a wheezy squeak. With a bit of research it appears to be from 1915-1917. The cabinet fortunately is largely walnut and in fine shape. I have begun the process of gutting it, and refurbishing the cabinet. Stand by in the tactile section for progress reports and pictures. I have carefully disassembled everything and saved the pieces, if anyone needs the parts for a project of their own, let me know. |
