More clobber: a tweed three-piece: And also found a pair of huntin' breeks/plus fours, again wrongly labeled as a 38" waist, closer to a 34", which is wearable with braces: Wow, Herr Doktor!! Were there labels in these garments? It looks to me as if you might have found the true Bookster. Don't think the suit has a label of any kind, but I'm fairly certain that it was last worn in 1999, the wearer ate a cheese and ham sandwich, and picked his teeth. The breeks do have a label, I'll check when I get home.

More clobber: a tweed three-piece: ... You lucky thing! Another charity shop find? I think you have a better class of charity shop in your neck of the woods. All I ever seem to find around here is shell suits and baseball caps. And... last weekend was the first car boot sales of 2012: Lordy! Poor turn-out and pickings were slim to non-existent. All I got was a 2½" long cap pistol. Oh great, you said lucky, the last time Herr Doktor had a lucky find such as that I had a similar one across the pond. Great suit.

Right- or left-handed?

Herr Doktor, was he a redheaded man? was he left handed? was there half a lottery ticket in the watch pocket?

Herr Doktor, was he a redheaded man? was he left handed? was there half a lottery ticket in the watch pocket? Well, the clues were a receipt from a Shell service station and a packet of toothpicks with two missing- as they were in the left-hand outer pocket of the jacket, it's possible that he was left-handed, but it's not conclusive...

The Countess and I were in Islington today and had a mooch about Chapel Street Mkt and Camden Passage. I picked up a couple of pairs of really nice, long 'Argyll' pattern socks..(look spiffing with m' plus fours!) and a really cool looking medalion (It's the same design as the one in this picture but mine says "Nat. Small Bore Rifle Assoc." round the four points of the cross on a darker blue colouring, the open area on the crown is filled in and coloured red and the whole thing is gold/brass coloured rather than silver.) Also found a nice maroon medal ribbon to hang it from.

I bet the minutes from their meetings are minute!

At last, something worth crowing about. Yesterday I picked up a Singer 201K sewing machine; 1948 hand-cranked cast iron model, rather like this one: It's in very good condition and still in its case, although the woodwork needs a little TLC. It almost killed me lugging this monster back to the car, but I'm looking forward to using it for leatherwork, bookbinding and other heavy-duty stitching that modern machines don't handle terribly well. Not bad for £10.

The NSRA is extant, and is what the SMRC turned into in 1947. I'll have a look through my collection* from the last few years and see if they've been handing out anything that matches the description - although they usually have a ribbon topped by a competition/date plaque attached. *Won, not bought!

The ribbon was a completely seperate purchase. I'm getting a lot of 'oohs" and "Wows" regarding this medal. Is it rare? Do I have something special?

My first flea market finds from this past weekend. A brass bellows, some watch cases, brass knobs, and brass trim. Coming soon to a weapon near you...

On Saturday I stopped in a small antique store in Boulder City, Nevada. I found this on the discount table. Everything on the table was for sale for $5.00 US. I'm sure it was discounted because it is not an antique. It was probably made about 20 years ago. But it is made out of wood and solid brass. I love the look. And only $5.00 It's a music stand with candle holders. Very victorian looking. I will find some old sheet music and use it in my submarine room.

Terribly sorry, forgot all about this one yesterday! Here's the three types of medals I have, I suspect that yours bears closest resemblance to the middle one? If it's not quite like this, then at least we can pin it down to the period 1947-2000 (ish) As to rarity, well you'd have to find out which competition it was awarded for and thus how many might exist. As it's not a military medal I don't think that there's going to be any great clamour from collectors - but if you're curious then dropping the NSRA a line might prove useful?

Thanks for that, Major. Mine is the same as THE IMAGE on the middle one (ie not printed/embossed on a circular medal but actually cross shaped with the wreath round it and everything.)

Cap'n D - did you check for hallmarks? Check very carefully, with a glass or even a loupe. Some of the older ones were sterling, I believe.
Wouldn't that be a find...
Cheers!

A close examination doesn't turn up any hallmark I'm afraid.
