Not sure how 'Steamy' this is, but I got this book from an artist friend who's cleaning house prior to a move. Its a biblical text  from what looks like the 30's-50's that he picked up at a garage sale. It must weigh a couple pounds and while I'm not interested in the contents, the embossed cover is amazing.

Depending on its size, I would make an Ipad or Nook case out of that

Well this is one of those times we ARE judging a book by it's cover......
and I would call that with in the realms of Steampunk.... I know you are
not interested in the contents of the book but may I ask what they are?

Its basically just Old testament biblical 'history'. Analyzing the stories of the bible intermixed with facts about the middle-east, archeological evidence and plenty of artwork and photos. I'm sure it would be more interestign if I were religious. A lot of the photos are hand tinted, so even though I can't find a date anywhere, the layout is similar to some National Geo's from the 20's and 30's that I've read in the past.

Sounds like something that'd feel right at home on my bookshelf. Grin Could you share any pictures of the contents, too ? Smiley And maybe a more close-up picture of the title on the front cover ?

I second this-especially because of the contents! Grin  How big is this book?

Size is 8 1/4 x 11 inches. I don't think I'd have the heart to cut it up. It does appear to be part of a set though. Maybe if I had more then one copy.

Luke - Since I know not everyone is interested, I'll just post a link to a gallery of some interior shots.

Beautiful book cover!

If it were in my hands, I would be finding a safe, non-intrusive way to make a mold of the cover itself.
It would also make an awesome "linking book" for Myst fans.

I went to several estate sales today and came away with a handful of items for some projects I'm planning. I picked up a couple of 'ray guns', a small lantern, glass specimen container, a candle stick with gears, a box of copper colored 'springs', and a vial of powdered gold leaf. I may go back to the sale where I picked up the ray gun pieces tomorrow, they typically mark items half off on the last day of the sale.

Diamonds!

Well... yes, actually.  I picked up 3 whatsits some time ago, for a grand total of about $3.00 US.  They looked like little brass-headed hammers; odd shape, with a sort of a non-adjustable wrench jaw at one side.  Flat molded handles; they put me in mind of piano-tuning wrenches.  They got a bit lost in the move, until I found them this evening.  I got them out and looked them over - Russian.  Cyrillic writing - seems to be a price.  Two were 3 rubles; one was ten rubles - the newer one, inflation gets everything.

Then, as I was turning them over in my hands, something caught my eye - a flash in the top of the head... each had it, seems to be a faceted - diamond?  Dawn breaks over Marblehead!  A diamond - industrial grade, of course - to score the glass; a hammer to crack it, or the 'wrench' jaws - each one has a different size for different thickness of panes - to snap along the line of the scoring.

And all for about a dollar a piece.

I would call that a score.

Cheers!

Chas.

Not a SP find but something that will become SP in the end. I've found a cheap flatbed scanner for my scanner camera project. The scanner is going to be placed behind a homemade large format camera.
Also for the same project I found a toy binocular that had the perfect lens.

I found one of those exact lamps, I've already used the top and have the rest of it waiting in parts bins. It's hard to see, but the top is under the copper elbow with the light on it, on my Steam Powered Hard Drive.

Today I went to a 2nd hand clothing store, near my house, and found these 3 beauties:

An elastic red shirt (kinda reminded me of a Pirate themed outfit):

A blue victorian style shirt with tear-drop cleavage(my favorite of all 3 pieces):

A men's vest with a fleur-de-lis pattern on it (I'm going to make some changes to this):

Well here's another auction find.... a pair of leather gaiters from the late 1890's or early 1900's....
military style.... it has some interesting fastening items on it they are in very good condition and
could probably be worn.

those are very nice, a bit of oil or wax and they'll be ready to wear no problem

Woot!

I stopped at a Goodwill on the way home tonight and noticed a leather bomber-style jacket on the "Special Price" rack.  It's thick, heavily-grained leather, lined in striped satin.  The only problem is the liner is torn from the right sleeve armpit to the waistband.  Nothing a needle and thread can't fix since it's a clean tear with no ragged edges.  Aside from the tear, the jacket has been well taken care of.  It's already been broken in, the leather is super soft and it smells WONDERFUL.

All for $25.92.

This lucky find is what it's taken for me to pull my duster out of the closet and try to find it a new home.

On a road trip to the In-Laws for Christmas - oh, joy - stopped off and found a few real deals in a little flea market/"antique" mall in Virginia.  After I saw Captain's roller-crimper on another thread, I got lucky and found one of my own... now I need to pick his brains on how to actually use it, as I do happen to have a damascus-barreled rabbit ear shotgun to compete with.

Looks something like this...

Got a big tin document box (10 bucks, but a split seam), a truly broken-up mission-style clock (but the works look good! - $12.00), and a Wards gun-cleaning kit in a tin box for 5 dollars.

But the neatest find was one exactly like this one:

The dealer happened to be looking in the case at the time.  He had it listed at $18.00, but he said he had got it in a box of other stuff at an auction, and decided to put it in the case "instead of pitching it"...  Shocked  Since he didn't even have the combination, he asked me to make him an offer - I said "Ten bucks?" And he said "Sold!"

I had it disassembled and reset the combination before dinner this evening.  Score.

Cheers!

Chas.

Oh, almost forgot - and a push-button wall light switch with brass plate for $1.50 - C

So far it is just set to something I will remember.  We are investigating possible combinations of letters; the wheels are interchangeable, but there are limitations - if the only P is on the same wheel with the only Y,  "psych" is obviously a non-starter.

But yes, it will be awesome.  And no, sorry, I won't share my combination!  But rest assured, the consensus on BG would approve.

So what part of VIrginia are you going to be in? you might be in my neigborhood....
