ALSO: a Tag Sale Find! The town of Chester CT holds a town wide tag sale every year on the Memorial Day Saturday. There are from 20 to possible 50 tag sales in town that day. Sponsored by one of the town committees or clubs, maps are sold at several points with the addresses and spots marked out. The funds are raised by being included in the map (for residents) and by sales of these maps. SO, if you are in the Chester area (South to South East Central Shoreline) this day, you may want to experience the crazyness. The Essex steam train is also nearby. I am not a sponsor or a seller of the above event, just a scrounger. As a matter of fact, why did I tell you!?! My secret is out what did I do!?! GAH! : ) Cheers - g Sorry if this is in the wrong place

TAG SALE
When a person, family, or sometimes neighborhood offers their no-longer-wanted items for sale to the general public. General public then buys the items, stores for a while, and someday will hold their own tag sale to be rid of said items. : ) Also, sometimes a misnomer as many people omit the tag, which of course is to have the price of the item on it. This can lead to haggling, and even to the seller's wife nagging her husband to just get rid of the thing and the buyers wife to roll her eyes and mutter things like "just what we need, another piece of crap". I guess it can be kind of like a flea-market where each vendor spot just happens to be at the vendor's house, or a boot sale (for our UK friends) where the boot is the size of a garage, and there is no car. . . Cheers - g

Well.. it was an eventful day. There's an enormous "flea market" (otherwise known as a "swap meet", or "trade days") about an hour from where I live. When I say enormous... I'm not messing about. Canton Trade Days has been in existence since the late 1800's and covers over 100 acres today.
Paladin
Paladin, I am an avid Canton shopper as well! I have links here to my shop on Etsy where I make my jewelry from all my little Canton finds! Don't you just love that place!!!! There is definitely no place like it! How are all the projects going? I have just started trying to make a little money off mine and hope they go well! Love the goggles they rock! Do you have any particular vendors at Canton or do you just roam aimlessly as well lol! QD PS here is my link if anyone is interested in checking out my wares I have just started selling my art so be gentle lol! http://www.etsy.com/shop/TrendFusionStudios

I looked at the site and the video, it seems that what I see the road to heaven looking like, my wife sees a road to perdition. : ( Someday I may downsize to the point of having a trailer to sell items at an event like that, but I think the price of fuel would be more than the total price of of all the items I could haul. But I hope to make it there osmeday, at least to get the t-shirt. Cheers - g P.S. I have no items to post this week, I am saving my $$ for Chester Tag Sale Day.

Sadly, the missus and I were unable to attend the first round of Brimfield (MA) last week, so we did a mini-tour of the shops and thrifts down here in south-central CT. . . Total: 48$, less than gas to go to Brimfield and no crowds : )
Speaking of Brimfield, the next show runs July 12 to 17: http://www.brimfieldshow.com/

I picked up a wind-up alarm clock, which unfortunatly has plastic gears It looks like this: I'm planning to take off it's hands and face and make it in an older style to use about my house. I also saw a pocket watch for 25$ that I couldn't afford. If anyone is intrested I'd be happy to go back and take pictures for you.

Here's an interesting little brass doo-dad I picked up at a car boot sale recently. It's about 4 inches long and solid brass. Those of you familiar with such things will recognise it's similarity to a 'magic mushroom'..which gives a bit of a clue to it's function.. It unscews into three pieces and re-assembles thus: I believe it was the popular beat combo 'Weezer' who sang "You have your big G's, I have my hash pipe"

@ RoseOak: Picture 1 - AWESOME! , Picture 2 - I am sorry but your puppy is much too cute, please turn down the cuteness control before people melt , Picture 3 - Is that guy yelling "Hey! catch that falling hand and keep it on ice for me aye!?! An excellent find, I am most green-eyed envious. My own finds at buy Chester were a bit bleak, with one great buy, but it was actually from Deep River. The original owner was a time clock - typewriter - elevator repair guy in the 1920's and 30's $30.00 US and the ehhh stuff The saw handles may become weapon stocks or grips, the candle holder tops will be rolled the other way for bracer plates the brown lightbulb is a salt shaker, the loom shuttle is for a carpet loom, the pile of parts next to the books are turn-stops that I could use to fix the tool satchel ( but I will probably use buckles), yes that is a moose lamp, and the wrench was a obligatory buy, the little book is a French - English dictionary. Total cost $25.00 The gauges are all plastic , vise, candle sticks er Ray Gun parts, a tooled leather bottle (1980's ish), another saw, a little bottle and a little blue jar, copper bracelet, mini-clock, incense burning turtle (in case Capt. Dirigible demonstrates his doo-dad LOL) , 2 jello forms for the collection, and a metal tray. $15.00 @ Dr. von Zarkov I am saving my allowances already for July Cheers - g

Two collars, one ultra stiff and the other semi soft (although not by modern standards) and pearl collar stud, total £3.50 I wanted three really sweet wee buttons that were essentially like 'batchelor's buttons' with a loop and pin instead of having to sew them on. But as they were silver with enamel flowers on them, the cost was beyond an impulse buy.

I must admit, auctions, flea markets, estate-garage-yard sales, thrifts, & antique stores are a personal weakness for me. Fortunately in New England, you are never far from one. And they are ever changing. An auction or flea market that was awful the week prior could be fantastic the next time visited, truly wonderful if you enjoy old things; I do. I've been going to them since I was 10 or so. One thing I've learned over the years is not to rush. Look at everything carefully and consider. No matter what time you arrive, you will always find treasure missed by others if you do this. I love lamps and lighting. I am slowly piecing together the "right" elements for a statement lamp. Leviton "fat boy" sockets obtained and in them, these. They work, are roughly 60W apiece, and the filaments just wild - Another bulb, a marque lamp from the 1920's, soooooo bright, it overloaded my camera - I found this last weekend, it's a pruner but an odd one. It is unmarked, measures out in inches in every dimension, and in the pattern of a Sheffield knife of the same era. The handle is rosewood - This watchmaker's lathe is from the 1860's & bought for a song -

Aaaargh!!!!!!!!! (I just dropped dead of jealousy) [/quote] Resurrect man, resurrect! Your contributions would be missed at this forum! Sometimes stuff like this just drops in your lap. I got it very late in the day where the boot seller had forgotten it in the recesses of his car. He had nothing else like it and thought it was homemade. It did not look like this when I got it, it was covered in grease, muck, and years of forgotten cellar-storage detritus. I think that for the cleaning effort I put into it, I was deserving of the seller's low price. But, this is New England. As one of the oldest settled parts of the country, these types of things are still hidden away & awaiting.....me!

This watchmaker's lathe is from the 1860's & bought for a song - Gosh I'm envious. I recently picked up a pivot burnisher identical to this one... ...but I'm still hoping to come across a lathe to go with it. At today's Car Boot hunting I picked up a couple of Edwardian pencils - one propelling, one clasp - for 50p each! They both need repair and refurbishment, but that shouldn't be a problem. But what really made my day was the solid oak drop-front writing desk and barometer/clothes brush wall set. The desk is in very, very nice condition, with working lock and the key to go with it. I got them both for £20 as the seller just wanted rid of them. All I have to do now is find somewhere in the house to put the desk...
