I need to start going to more swap meets (and thrift stores), theres always neat stuff, and it seems to be a good way for me to get my feet wet with Steampunk. I dont even have my first set of goggles  Goggles won't help you if your feet get wet. |

Love it - what are they called so I may find one? This was an Ebay find , I found it by searching "folding cup pocket watch". It is a hundred years old and no one is making anything quite like it , however there is this at http://www.stanleylondon.com/dalveycup.htm $86.50 , though I have seen them on Ebay for less . |

Love it - what are they called so I may find one? This was an Ebay find , I found it by searching "folding cup pocket watch". I found mine going through rummage boxes at a flea market until I managed to find all the rings and a watch case to put them in. |

I had to inherit mine. it is a beautiful piece - I will have to find it and put up a piccy.
Sterling, with a very elegant little handle that folds over on a hinge to the inside. Little leather case, too.

Today's haul from the Ballarat swap meet:
- six glass 1/2 pint milk bottles (for my wife)
- a large tin hatbox for (my wife)
- an old petrol tank, probably off one of those fold up paratrooper motor scooters from WW2
- a brass horn off a train, for modding
- another set of old Stromberg Carlson headphones, for modding
- an air gun handle, for a ray gun
- a metal tool box labelled 'Honda Special Tool' (no tool inside)
Not a bad lot, long drive though.

Rummage boxes are a great wealth of unknown treasure. Large plastic boxes underneath tables at flea markets and car boot sales where the owner couldn't be bothered to sort through and so places a sign upon declaring "EVERYTHING 50P" Some times you can have a rummage around and pull out pure gems at ten bob a piece. At other times you pull out a bag full of used corn plasters. Needless to say, but I did not purchase said bag. The stall next door which was selling carbolic soap did, however, get my trade shortly afterwards (ah, carbolic, such fond family memories) |

Not a flea market but:
Between the newspaper shop and the railway station is the bin where I always discard the sports supplement and this morning there was an apparently brand new belt hanging out of it. Naturally, I bagged it and it is a perfectly nice, clean, albeit cheapish, very wide black elastic belt with two fleather buckles at the front.
Now why on earth would anyone discard such an item? I would have said this was the sort of thing that anyone could wear.

So I see that this guy has some typewriters for sale on craigslist. I go to his house and inquire about two different models. He shows me a whole bunch of the items in question. He says, folks just don't appreciate fine machinery like this anymore, he had only one other person call about the advertisement and they didn't even show up... All I said is "well, i appreciate them and I'm here". Lesson for the day.... Be nice to your fellow man. Share a joke or two, Be sincere, and at least show interest in what he has to say and you never know what will happen. And here I thought I was going to get only one or two. This is a pic of what used to be my work bench.  |

I managed an early morning trip to the Camberwell Market this morning, haven't been for a good six months or so - but it is still good. I picked up a sterling silver salt server with blue glass insert and a glass butter dish with lid to add to our home collection of antique ephemera. I scored a bench mounted drill press in good working order (needed one of those in the workshop for some time now), another set of old headphones, a glass container with a glass container inside it (I think it is a balsamic/oil server but it will become a lab piece sculpture), and the best find of all - an amazing lab flask.  Why is that amazing I hear you say? Well - it holds five litres and stands 40cm tall - biggest one I have ever seen. UPDATE (later that day). So there I am in my workshop testing the bench drill, which runs very well thank you. I cut the old bit of string off the drill that had the chuck key tied to it. My good lady wife is sitting in her wingback chair watching me test the drill press (I have a wingback chair in my workshop for her to sit in). And my wife says "Oh I know what that thing is, that's the chuck isn't it?" To which I reply, "Close dear, it's actually the chuck key. Do you know this is the most important part of the drill, so important that they wrote a song about it?" "Really - what is the song" "Well, it is chuck key's in love of course" (Okay - I am going now). |
