Warning, big pics...First stall of the morning on the car boot, I was greeted with this:  THERMIONIC VALVES!I only bought three (gave one to someone else who liked the look of it)... I'm beginning to think I should've bought more. I also found this military esque glasses case, with some interesting glasseslikethings inside. For a quid I thought why not: Now I want to know what the lenses are for. Any ideas?

They look like they might clip on to some other eye-ware or head gear..are they magnified at all? Nice finds though! I recently bought a huge tin full of old tubes. No idea what to do with them as well |

They are slightly magnified (reading glasses maybe?). They also have a spring at the top, so they can nearly butterfly (but not fully).
There is two pegs coming out at the front that could maybe connect it to something.

So, after this Topic hasn't been active in a time, I decided to try some Brazen Dawn learned necromacy on it and... huzza! Fleamarket Finds! We have a fleamarket here in Denver. Largest west of the Mississippi River. http://www.milehighfleamarket.com/Acres and acres of stalls selling the same new stuff made in some obscure overseas sweatshop no doubt, but on the weekends the people come out with the blankets on the ground and all sorts of magical elderly things appear. Walk around, drink a beer, eat a turkey drumstick and keep an eye out for 'treasures' The only difference between junk and treasures is which side of the selling table you are on. I love flea markets, garage sales, car boot sales, and junk stores. Find the neatest stuff there! My blow torch! I also love old keys and books and have aquired quite the collection of both over the years. |

Living in Ohio, I find that piece very interesting. Even moreso that it was found in Germany! Next you need to find a good flatbed scanner at the flea market.  DB |

I don't know how interested anyone is, but the glasses (on page 2) appear to be optic inserts. They are designed to be worn "under" something that prohibits regular glasses, such as a gas mask or diving equipment. I cannot be sure, but I've worn several inserts over the last couple decades and some were very much like these in form.

Ya, I got myself a pair of those Masonic goggles, HOW COOL ARE THEY?! Mine don't have any lenses though.. Also, I hate you all for living in America, where this kinda stuff is under appreciated. Back in Aus, to acquire the items you picked up, I would be paying at least $80, which is why I am so broke right now. I can't wait to go to the US of A with a huge empty suitcase. Imagine the look on the border securities face when they x-ray my items Want me to rub it in some more?.... There are smaller, but still just as wonderful, flea markets within driving distance of my house on at least three out of four weekends every month Come on over to visit soon! There's plenty for everyone. Paladin First and foremost - great goggles and gearwheels, you have an eye for quality finds. Secondly - don't write the Antipodes off too soon Texaspaladin - not sure where you are but we have the Camberwell market in Melbourne every Sunday, and the annual swap meets all over Victoria are amazing (Ballarat is easily the biggest). So bring that empty suitcase down here and come hunting with us folk... |

Here’s one of my latest finds: I believe this is a bell unit for a candlestick telephone. Someone has modified it a bit, but the mod seems to be very old. They replaced the back of the box with plywood, added a protective cover to the bell, relocated the connection posts to the top, and added a leather strap as a handle. When cranked very quickly, I get @50 VAC across the posts. If I connect the posts to each other, the clacker strikes the bells very slowly. Any phone buffs out there? I pulled the back and inside is the dynamo(?) and the coil for the striker, nothing else. Is there anything missing? I cannot find any numbers inside or out, just the “GPO” on the bottom and the letters on the top. I only get the volt reading with my probes one way. I though + and – didn’t matter with AC voltage. If I switch the probes, I do not get any reading. Is this correct, or am I doing something wrong? This was sitting on the ½ price shelf, so I got it for $12.50! Now I need to figure out if it is just going to sit on a shelf, or if it will be a donor for some project. Any suggestions? |
