Another vote for "leave it as found" ... that well-earned patina of many years is so hard to duplicate artificially , and yet, therre you have it in your hands...

Skip (dumpster) diving, I scored an original interior panelled door from a house a few doors up from mine.  Grin
It's been 'dipped and stripped' back to bare wood. Sadly the original beading from around the panels has been removed and replaced with new plain rounded stuff (probably because it was too much work to remove paint from the very detailed bead). Roll Eyes

It's luckily an exact fit for my study door (with a little shaving here and there to match the frame), as it came from the same room as mine. Mine is original too, but is badly warped /twisted and has dropped so much that it can no longer be properly closed - it closes at the top, but the bottom sticks out by several inches and the catch can't hold it...

Hope to recover the beading from my door and replace it on the new one.

Looks like this one (generic image search - camera needs new batteries):

Worth around £80 at a reclamation yard, and I got it for free!  Grin

I had a dream last night that I found the most beautiful old carpet bag in a charity shop for £4 and it was perfect as an overnight bag (which I need). I was gutted when I woke up and realised it didn't exist. I even thought about how I was going to be able to post in this thread about it.

*Sigh*

Ada, just keep looking in the shops - it may still turn up, probably when you least expect it!

First I would like to find out if this item has any financial value and in what state, polished or as is. Personally I would love to see it bright and polished, like it's ready to be used.
Love the flying elephant emblem by the way. Lovely find.

I hope so, I would really like a bag like that. Although I would have a terrible shock if I found one exactly the same.

They are marvellous! A little geographically inconvenient for my trip tomorrow but bookmarked for a potential future treat.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

When the time comes, if they are sticky about international shipping, don't hesitate to ask.  We would be happy to facilitate.

Cheers!

No picture, but I picked up a nice chrome-plated heavy duty music stand in town on Thursday.

Got 13 slightly tatty copies of pictorial education from 1927/28 for a tenner.

The original plan was to cut out some photos, knock up some picture frames for the the best ones, then paste the rest as wallpaper somewhere.

I cant do it! should I destroy 87 year old publications? No.

Oh well, not sure what to do with them now......

I just bought some Lorgnettes (without handle) on ebay for 99p intending to break them up for use in another project and when they came the seller had missed the silver hallmarks for Exeter 1839, which was nice. Except I can't bring myself to destroy them now so need to find another use for them (and get another pair for said project).

Maybe you could add handles to them and make them into lorgnettes? Wink

I agree that the best thing you could do is put them on handles, now you have a side project of either making new handles or finding interesting ones to adapt. Enjoy whichever you decide to do.
