A Short-Magazine Lee-Enfield, Number 4 Mk II.  For $67.50, plus tax, of course.

Essentially the same rifle as the one they adopted in 1895.  Now this one has been "sporterized" badly, and some surface rust has started, so it has lost just about all of its collector/historical value... which is both why it was so inexpensive, and why I will feel no guilt when I begin to convert it in steamy fashion.  There are some original brass parts available, which I will use to start.  I am thinking a brass scope, and perhaps an overly-complicated brass bipod.

This should be fun.

Cheers!~

I've been going junking lately and I've picked up a number of things, including old electronics and whatnot.  I've found some armatures that look like they'd be a part of a miniaturized Tesla Coil or something, and a bunch of plastic gears.  While I'd much prefer metal gears, since I'm getting these for nothing, I think it's a pretty good deal.  I'll post pics of some of the more fun pieces soon.

My cousin's son gave me (here because he must have gotten it at a flea market) a Kodak 50th Anniversary Brown Box Camera from 1930 (which would be Dieselpunk) with damage to the back. We already have one in pristine condition so I don't feel bad about "punking" it. I am thinking about a camera that can photograph the past with some brass parts and a knob to set the date to be photographed. I also saved a wreck of a folding Kodak stereo camera that we cannibalized for parts. I think I will give it a try as well.

A friend and I went antiquing today.  I was dead set on finding some things to use in my jewlery and he was looking for stuff to use as props in his photos.  Needless to say I encountered one of my favorite things:  African art:  Note the one that has the nice brassy bits attached.

And finally I found a compass, about 8 inches across.  With a 3 strange knobs that look like it was designed to be wired into something.  Does anyone have any idea what this is?  It only cost me $15.  I have yet to find it online.  The manufacturer is J.M. Bunn out of New York.

In a local charity shop I have come across this hand cranked Singer sewing machine for £10 complete with original instruction book, box of needle attachements (to make verious patterns of stitching), spare needles and spools. It works like a dream...such a fine piece of retro tech. I adore it...I never did like those foot peddles on electric ones, now I can turn a lovely wheel and do some awesome stuff in the name of my wardrobe. I look forward to the results!

Mr Craven's link sort of works for me - but it just takes to to the Facebook log in page.

Not a hope...

Please, chaps, if you insist on posting Facebook links, make sure that they're fully public.

Found in my father in law's shed (rather than a flea market) hanging on the back of the door.

Its an old 50s / 60s soldering iron with a nice bakerlite handle.

What do you all reckon .... good start for a raygun ?  Grin

Today`s finds:

The clock does still run (or at least it was ticking, until I stopped it), but I`m thinking of taking it apart anyway.

The little gramophone is actually a pencil sharpener, but I`m thinking about whether or not I can turn it into a type of ear-trumpet-thing.

Down here under the bright arch of the southern skies we have a semi-annual ritual in the bush of hard rubbish collection. This is where householders deposit all sorts of goodies on the side of the road, and magpies like myself and my hideously deformed assistant Igor go out into the night to pick over what we can. The pick of last month's haul was the following beautiful wall mounting hair drier. I had always thought that this was a "permanent wave machine", but a small amount of research has convinced us these are those fiendish devices like a hanging medusa head with depending electric tentacles that connect to instruments in the victim's hair. Igor wants one of these to modify for his own fiendish purposes, but I am not sure that I can afford the power bill.

Anyway, here are some shots of the hairdrier. Note hammer for scale.

The photo of the inside of the psychic magnetron housing looks fantastic, the wiring is in good shape and barely any of the plutonium fuel rods have ruptured. Sadly I have nowhere to put it, and Igor is looking longingly at it, so it has to go. So I am thinking of cleaning it up a bit and Ebaying it. Alternatively, if anyone wants to suggest some suitable modifications, e.g for a home trepanations whilst you wait, or a hypno-learning machine I am sure that we would be most grateful.

I have to go, Igor has lost his only kidney again, so I expect that we will spend the evening getting the steam-powered dialysis machine going again. It's raining heavily, and grave (re)digging is very hard work.

Good idea, it would look excellent in the laboratory. Clean all the paint off, go natural aluminum. Over one of those nice stainless tables with a drain in the middle. With a tray of instruments to hand. Oh joy...

A colleague has a operating room shaodowless light as an office light, I have been looking for a means to one-up him.

That particular model has been used in some rather dodgy conversions to a plasma cannon.  With the proper handles and aiming mechanism, and the hanging arm used for a vehicular mount - airship, steamship, battlewagon - this could be a truly dangerous weapon.  And not just to the person who is operating it (I would suggest training Igor for that).

Best of luck!

Found an amazing item at a flea market last weekend.... a chemical tester used by doctors and scientists during times of chemical warfare Shocked Apparently it would determine what kind of chemical was in your patient....anyone seen anything like this before?

Not at a flea market.  When we were gearing up to go into Iraq, I saw a few.  I still have some of the old chemical-sensitive paper from that; I am sure it is no good now.

Never had to use any of that stuff, it weighed a ton... glad we never had to use it, though.

Cheers!

Thanks Chas! It was a remarkable find.... I'm thinking it came from pre-Vietnam but I can't say for certain.

Thank you sir for the suggestion of a plasma cannon. All I need now is a Zeppelin, I can see the aforementioned cannon proudly on the prow, possibly remotely operated via a system of chains and pulleys, as no normal person want to be near a plasma cannon when it is fired. Igor is living (at the recent meeting of the National Vivisectors League he as voted as "alive" 5 votes to 4, a personal first for him) proof that exposure to the secondary radiation from such a cannon can have deleterious effects on human tissue.

Another suggestion was to use the mount for a video ball, as was used by the scientists prior to sending Cole into the past in the thrilling cinematographic entertainment "Twelve Monkeys". Now there was a bunch of mad scientists that I would like to meet!
