After Sir Newton commented on my Calling Card of the Dead, I started a few rough ideas for a Steampunk Zombie/Esoteric Deck, which amounted to a few rough drawings and hunting for old photographs to zombify
But then the lovely Mrs. Sullivan wrote

"Some years ago on either the alt.gothic or alt.gothic.fashion board (can't remember which), forum members decided to make a collective Tarot deck and a card from the Major Arcana was assigned to each participant.  People had complete artistic license to make their card in any medium which appealed to them, and of course all designs were original.  (My card was "Justice", and took the form of a collage of a Japanese geisha with a sword).

To give you an idea of how long ago this was, we actually hand made cards and mailed them to the organizer, who then took them to a print shop and had sets made up for each participant.  I suppose something similar could be done much more easily nowadays using Photoshop and emailing them to a central location. <grumble> whippersnappers <grumble> Wink"

And I thought this would be a great idea, and would like to see how many forum members would like to take part. I would love to see everyones' ideas and if we can get someone for each of the Major arcana, Minor as well if this gets enough feedback.

Tell me what you think.

I'd love to see the results of this. I already have a sort of steampunk Tarot deck - the Gilded, which is more of a retro-tech steampunk Medieval fantasy:

Examples:

The Moon:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Wheel of Fortune:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Star:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The High Priestess:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(yep, I know I posted it in my Fortune Telling thread but I couldn't be bothered to find different links Cheesy)

However, I'd love to see a more dystopian, grimy, occult-type steampunk deck, sort of a steampunk version of the Bohemian Gothic deck, which I think encapsulates literary and Victorian Gothic very well, but I always look for the tech. And zombies are always a plus!

It's the sort of thing I'd love to take part in but I'm pushed for time. I'll keep an eye on this thread though, it's a great idea.

Wouldn't it be cooler to invent your own tarot-esque thing, instead of using pre-existing symbols? I mean, ones that directly related to you as a person, or Steampunk. Just an idea, I think there could be some really cool results

I should be very much up for taking part in it- I think its a rather wonderfull idea!
Just as a thought; I was wondering if it might be more practical to do a highly elaborate standard deck of cards, as they should probably see more use?

A good Tarot is both - just use the Minor Arcana and discard one of the lesser suits.

I find they are a bit big for this use, especialy when doing magic tricks.

That's just because Tarot designers are artistes who want to show off their pretties, methinks.  There's nothing in the Big Book Of Tarot that says that the cards have to be a certain size or shape (and round and hex decks exist).

Ah all of the decks that I have seen are bigger then a normal deck so I assumed that ours would be the same size. I would like it to be a normal card size however we could make one of both?

What I would like to do is have people do one suit each. If there is more than one person for each suit we have a compotition to see which is the best.

And of course, there's no need to call the suits Wands, Swords, Cups, Pentacles.

Maybe Cogs (Pentacles), Tesla Coils (Wands), Rayguns (Swords), Crucibles (Cups)? Cheesy

I am going to organize a list of ppl signed up by Friday of this week, and then we can discuss
You are all free to, and I encourage you to, start sketching, painting, sculpting, clicking.

If you want to send me a message with what favored Card you would like to design, I will put it into consideration. Or we can do a battle royal between artists

I'm in! Got to check out me deck for reference then attack my sketchbook...

Edit: On suits: I'm rather a fan of the more elemental side of things. Say... Brass, Oil, Steam and... Aether? *Shrug*

And... well... ok, I don't really like Rayguns. Sorry.
