Beer! The amber elixir of life! Oh, where would we be without a fine glass of ale on an autumn evening, or a cold lager in the heat of the day?
I submit that without beer, watches would sieze and jam, steam engines refure to turn and zeppelins fall from the sky!*
Anyone with me?
* I do not advocate the use of beer as a watch lubricant, engine fuel or zeppelin-lifting agent.

Fosters is for nannies! Have you ever been to Australia? No one drinks Fosters there because it's terrible! Compared to the real local brews anyway. I do miss me some XXXX. EDIT: Ah, the good Sir Flynn MacCallister beat me to it. Well said lad! Grolsch isn't very good either, I do have to admit that. I can't actually remember Stella Artois, so nevermind about that. Tell me Angel, who drinks fake ales? Roght. Always drink local, and luckily for me Portland is considered local enough (it's all in the Northwest you see)--they have all the fine breweries, most notably New Belgium with their delectable 1554 black ale or, as it is the season, their Springboard Ale. Another notable includes their Mothership Wit wheat beer, if you're feelin' a bit frisky. Fat Tire is always nice as well. Full Sail is another fantastic brewery with their Wassail being quite delicious, but only from tap--the bottles are dribble in comparison. Pete's Wicked Ale is always a fine choice. Widmer Brothers has a great winter seasonal, the Snow Plow (doesn't the name of it just make your mouth water?). Pyramid has a good selection here, but nothing extraordinary. Maritime Pacific's Jolly Roger deserves unique honor as a wonderfully potent (something like 9%) and singular drink of winter, brewed right here in Seattle. Further from me is the Sam Adams crew (yes, much further), whom I recently discovered to have a fine selection of their own. Their black lager is my current favorite, followed by their brown ale, and their Irish Red deserves a mention. I think that about does it for now. Berate me if you wish, but I stand by my choices!

You don't even export the stuff! The stuff WE get is made somewhere in newcastle, or something! Ah, but they do. The company has set up breweries here in the States to cut shipment costs, but it was originally exported, and still is in certain areas, from Australia. It's where the recipe is from that counts.

Murphy's Irish Stout.
in a pinch, I'll drink a Guinness, or Beamish or something else.
I've been enjoying some of the nuttier Ales out there recently too. Never been much of an IPA drinker though - too hoppy for me.

Local microbrewery amber ale (e.g., Cambridge Amber Ale here).
Otherwise Sam Adams.
Though most often, cider (just finished a 6 pack of Newton's Folly Granny Smith Cider).

You don't even export the stuff! The stuff WE get is made somewhere in newcastle, or something! See? We had to export the breweries too, it's that bad! Fosters is for nannies! Have you ever been to Australia? No one drinks Fosters there because it's terrible! Compared to the real local brews anyway. I do miss me some XXXX. EDIT: Ah, the good Sir Flynn MacCallister beat me to it. Well said lad!
...And only Queenslanders drink XXXX (fourecks, if you don't know it and were wondering. It's cause Queenslanders can't read, y'see? >_o). Most of the rest of us have VB, Hahn, Crown and Cascade as our local "typical" beers. VB is pretty poor, but it doesn't taste like you are imbibing a chemicals and detergents plant like Fosters does. Hahn's pretty damn good on tap. Crown is a Foster's brand, but infinitely better than plain old Fosters. Cascade is a Tassie beer, and pretty good, but I personally don't like it at all. I think Hahn is easily the best, but I am a Sydneysider. Normally my beer of choice, however, is James Squire's Amber Ale. Generally speaking, though, I'm not a fan of boutique/micro-breweries: most of the worst beers I have tasted were popular microbrewery beers. (Bluetongue, Little Creatures, Beez Neez, etc.)

I'm very partial to most of the beers made by the Wye Valley Brewery, primarily Hereford Pale Ale (HPA) and Butty Bach.
Another favourite brewery is the Otley Brewing Company whose OG is particularly good.
In terms of beers with a wider distribution I would probably go for Old Speckled Hen or Spitfire, which I regularly confuse with Bombardier and end up disappointed after my first sip.
