I (and my daughter, at least, possibly both Ohio-based sons as well) am hoping to get to Otakon, a large anime convention in Baltimore, MD. USA  this summer, 8-10 August at the Baltimore Convention Center. (work precluded my attendance last year, alas.)

While unsuccessfully trying to make hotel reservations, I had an odd thought - Patapsco Valley State Park is about 20 minutes away from the convention site, in non-rush hour traffic, and has some lovely group-camping accommodations. (and $6 a night beats H*LL out of $180 a night....)

I realize that (probably) none of us have Victorian-period canvas tents, brass-and-teak camp furniture, pack elephants, portable tea-services or handy native batmen/women, but, I think, a Steampunk Encampment could be a rather enjoyable affair (wtf?, as it were - more like an East-Coast "Slightly-Scorched-Man-with-Trees Festival".)

If there is any interest, please let me know, and I will make park reservations. I think it sounds like fun. I'll supply chili  Smiley

Aha! I would be interested. Since, with any luck, this is the last summer I'll be spending in the colonies, I was rather hoping to make it to Otakon this year. However I do need to save funds for such silly yet necessary things as rent and tuition, so money is very much an object... I am still not entirely sure that I will be able to attend, but inexpensive accommodation would certainly help, and of course the Steampunk Encampment aspect also sounds quite fun.

I was looking for an excuse to wear a non-anime costume to Otakon, actually. I can picture it now, the Steampunk Invasion...

A really nifty idea.

Sadly I won't be able to make anything outside of walking distance from the convention area as I'm flying in and am restricted to cabs and public transport.

Though I'm tempted to bring along my own Steam clothing if others will be also in addition to my anime cosplays.

yeah, you'd be surprised how many people attend that don't strickly cosplay anime characters.  We have cyber goths running around there all the time.  And someone cosplayed as the the ORL'Y owl... so its a do what you want convention.  The Newbs will want to take pictures of you anyway.
