Iron Sky: Nazis on the MOON!

We have always said that the theatrical run of IRON SKY may go beyond a single day release and here's the news you've all been waiting for …
 
Revolver is pleased to confirm that after taking on board each and every one of your comments, thoughts and feedback which we sent on to our cinema partners and with their support we are happy to announce that we are extending the film's run in the UK. Following on from the exclusive bloggers premiere on 21st May and the unique IRON SKY DAY on 23rd May, the film will continue to play at selected cinemas for as long as demand dictates. Now is the chance for all of you that have been so vocal to come out, support the film and keep it showing.

In an Official Statement, Ben Freedman, owner of London's Prince Charles cinema, commented: "We've always been in discussions with Revolver about extending the theatrical run of IRON SKY and they have always agreed that if demand was strong enough we would keep it going. We have enormous belief in the potential of the film to become a cult classic in the vein of Rocky Horror and The Room and keep audiences flocking to the Prince Charles for many years to come.

I don't know what to make of that - was it all a scam? did the cinema owners apply pressure to the distributor? did the cinema owners get cold feet and had to be persuaded that people really would turn out to watch the film rather than protest it? or is it as it seems, they got bludgeoned into it by public demand???

In any case a few more opportunities opening up.

Publicity stunt. Announce far less than people reasonably expect, let them work up a good froth, then say "okay, you win" at the last moment. Works every time.

Got to see it.  Laregley enjoyed it but I wasn't entirely convinced it knew what it was.  Dark satire, broad comedy, surrreal comedy?  It veered a bit on tone, laugh out loud(ish) moments, then death - and not comedy death.  Some bits set the tone perfectly: the outfits and machinery - and of course the US President!

My friend said "there's cult in the making."

Someone in the audience shouted out at the end, at the Moon - "so it is made of cheese!"

Take your pick - but see it.  There's nothing quite like it.

I understand the UK DVD/Blu Ray release happens Monday, so I guess I can hold out for that. I'm glad no one seems to have hated it so far anyway. I couldn't help but think how ironic it would be, if after all this furore the film itself turned out to be utter pants!

I didn't get to see this on Saturday as planned due to ..well...see the 'GAAAAAAAAHH!!' thread..but I am informed by the pal who I was due to go with that it's a members only cinema and the subscription fees have help pay for new seats, air-conditioning and new toilets. Although, Iron Sky is being shown on the smaller upstairs screen  the auditorium of which seats about 50. I gather the rule of thumb is not to be in the first row or you're likely to be 'in the film' as it were!

It does have a membership scheme, but not members only as I was able to buy tickets on line - £8 non members, £4 members. Seats don't seem to be pre-allocated so I'll try to pick the tickets up early and see what is what.

The film was really quite good, plenty of laugh out loud moments and I enjoyed the special effects - not too zoomy or over emphasised - just right IMO. I just don't get Revolution though - I couldn't see any reason why they should want to hold back on its release, even Mark Kermode gave the film his seal of approval. Epic and mad as a box of frogs - recommended.

I spoke to one of the guys from Revolution at MCM where they were selling the DVD.  I asked him why it seemed they had gone straight to DVD?  He was very mealy mouthed and evasive. He said they had gone into cinemas in major cities and had made sure that no-one in the UK had to travel more than 40 miles to see the movie.  (This is not actually true).   He said that the cinemas were given the option to extend the one night only run and some had done.

Tellingly he said "this is an arts film and we only need a cinema release for the fans".

I got the impression that they had organised the one night cinema release to be able to say they had met their contractual obligations but had no intention of working for a general release.

I enjoyed it; some very good and very funny moments.... Bits of it were rather more... almost poignant, than I'd expected. Still; would recommend.

Managed to go and see it in the cinema, luckily said cinema was literally just down the road from my flat. But I must say I absolutely loved it, well worth the four year wait. I also loved Laibach's contribution with the soundtrack

Ride of the valkyries playing out when the Americans strike back against the Nazi fleet was a nice touch

The designs of the Nazi moonbase and machinery were also fantastic. The Göterdammerung was a beautiful machine, a massive saucer built almost entirely out of gears and chains

I was quite surprised to see the DVD available in HMV today.  Nearly bought it too- then remembered the proceeds go to the distributor, who mucked the distribution up so much and provoked such anger. 

So- does anyone have a link direct to the Finnish/ Norwegian release?

I just watched it, and it was good and weird.... Certainly not something Hollywood would take a risk on! The sheer strangeness of the combination of Moon Nazis, modern American politics, a fashionista made general, and the very dark ending made for some original entertainment....

I got a copy at MCM but had neither the time nor equipment to enjoy it till today!

An entertaining film, good use of budget and highly enjoyable! A real shame it seems like Revolver were so sloppy with the cinema release, it really could have been the 'Box Office Sensation' that it claims to have been on the DVD case.

There would be no way Hollywood would release this, especially during an election year.

Circumstances left me in the middle of London with time to kill yesterday evening, so I took advantage of the situation and went to see Iron Sky.
I must commend the staff of the Prince Charles Cinema who were kind enough to store my not inconsiderable baggage whilst I went for something to eat, and watched the film. A service that I doubt that the local multiplex would offer.

I greatly enjoyed the film, which I suspect will come to be regarded as a Dieselpunk classic.
It was far from perfect, the writing was a bit week in places, and in my opinion Udo Kier was not used well in his role. But the humor hit more often than it missed, and some of the effects scenes were truly impressive. I must agree with Gendrick, the Göterdammerung was a sight to behold, and the ending was both striking and memorable.
All in all, I would say that it was definitely worthy of a wider theatrical release, especially if you consider some of the rubbish that makes it onto our cinema screens. (Lesbian vampire killers, anyone?)


In Other news, The Region 2 DVD is now available for pre-order from the IRON SKY ONLINE SHOP.

A bit pricy in my opinion, but the cost includes postage, and none of the money goes to Revolver.

Well Iron Sky entered the UK Box Office charts at number 10.   With a limited access release this was absolutely staggering.
