(late reply to the photos of it finished) OH MY GOD. That is utterly beautiful! *WILD APPLAUSE* Lathe - How about the Unimat Classic? £199 for a small but functional kit of bits that go together as a lathe, mill, drill press etc.

Ah ha! I can go one better and tell you that I am the proud owner of a unimat technical set - unfortunately, the one thing that it won't do is screw threads. Curse my innability to read simple specs before parting with my hard eaned cash! Other than that it is a clever machine, but in truth I've hardly used it in the 4 yeas that I've had it, the scale of work it will handle is just too small. But a good thought though, all the same, thanks. Another item to sell on E-bay I think.

Thankyou! Yes, the planets are all hand painted wooden balls bought from a craftshop - you can buy them in different sizes, so are perfect for this application.
This whole project is grand, and it seems to get more breathtaking every time you update!

Thankyou! Well it's now finished, big cheesy grin, and is up for sale on E-Bay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wooden-Orrery-of-the-First-Six-Planets_W0QQitemZ180252585404QQihZ008QQcategoryZ414QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemHaving a few problems with E-Bay though, for some reason it's not saved my postal options - it should be available all over the world, but it's come up as only available and visible on E-Bay in the U.K., and as a local pick up only. It won't let me adjust the postal settings for the listing, I can't even contact E-Bay for them to sort it. It seems that E-Bay has broken down!! But why does it choose to break down when I need it! Oh blinkin flip. Hope you like it anyway. I'm really pleased with how it's turned out, just hope that somebody out there likes it enough to part with their hard earned cash!

According to the Unit Converter widget, that's $65 Canadian, or $64 US, at this evening's rates. oh, and does anyone know of a website price-converter thing? there are so many people outside of the us that i really could benefit from that
If you have a Mac, use the Unit Converter widget. If you don't have a Mac, the Unit Converter widget gets its exchange rates from Yahoo! Finance.

Yes! E-Bay seems to have ignored all my postal settings, and now won't let me edit them. But yes, I will ship anywhere in the world. Hopefully, E-Bay can fix this to make it visible to users other than just those in the U.K. Hey ho, you live and learn.

Results of a Google search for "41 euros in US dollars"" 41 Euros = 63.2384 U.S. dollars Rates provided for information only - see disclaimer. More about currency conversion." I'm tempted to go one better than the usual cliche and say Google is better than sliced bread- you can't do instantaneous currency conversions with a breadknife! Sliced bread isn't all that, to be honest. Note that this trick will work in all sorts of units, as well- see one gallon in teaspoons and one nautical mile in furlongs. It doesn't understand stadia or bushels, but it's pretty good nonetheless.

There is literally a tear of joy in my eye as I behold the finished product of this epic journey. No detail has been left untouched, from the overall finish to the hand painted planets. I am absolutely inspired.

That video is entrancing- it's a lot smoother than I thought it was going to be, and the top gear spinning so fast is hypnotic. Do you know why the spinning of the earth is so "stop-start"? I guess I'm at risk of having to hand in my steampunk membership card (or possibly Federated Cantons Passport) for this but I'd be sorely tempted to motorise it and leave it slowly rotating all the time. Maybe it could be coupled to a clock movement and run in real-time

Maybe it could be coupled to a clock movement and run in real-time the stop start is an optical illusion having to do with the relative speed in relation to the framerate of the video camera. The same thing will happen with airplane and helicopter propellers which will appear to change direction, or stop entirely when filmed. In reality - the earth rotates the whole time - and in fact completes 364 full rotations for each full orbit of the sun.

Thanks for that Rogue D, You explained that a whole heap better than I ever could! Yes indeed, it's down to a rubbish video camera I'm afraid, but the world really does spin poperly the whole time - at about 800rpm in fact at normal handle turning speeds! Only just worked that out... wow. I shall try to get a close up and slowed down film produced of the Earth before it goes to it's new home, but Mark II is now taking shape..

Mark II?! *Faints* I think you should give yourself a challenge, and model the Milky Way MM, do you have any mechanical engineering experience? Because the apparent ease with which you built this is astounding. If I were to attempt to make something like this, the sun would be spinning round the moon, which would be moving vertically around Pluto (which doesn't even deserve to be in the orrery ). How did you get the gearing worked out?!
