Well, it’s been a long while since I've been around, and even then I had just started. But work has slowed and my life is returning so I can start working on personal projects. So I thought I would share. This project will be a prop I'm making for a movie in the works a few years down. This particular item is a device that is found by a kid who's great, great, grandfather invented (I forget exactly how many greats) The device was to be kept hidden until the time came that the world was a world of science and was ready for such a power. The idea is with optics, magnetism, and electricity all working together to in effect turn on areas of the brain that lay unused. The orbiting rings are temp. I will have a few rings along with other goodies. Lots of movement with optics spinning and electro magnetism in the center. At the bottom is small Wimshurst machine that feeds the power. The top has 2 opposing coiled springs that when wound will get the device spinning. Which the spinning creates the electricity. This is all done by hold the two handles and pulling them apart with some effort. The pulling turns the gears and winds the coil engines in the top cylinder. I hope to have a ratcheting mechanism to keep it from pulling itself back (and should sound cool) Once its been pulled fully apart, you'll click a button to start her up. The handles will have metal on them on the lower side. This connects the person to the device electrically. The optic will be spinning and the crystal in the center will pulse (due to electricity) at the exact frequency of the user. This pulls mixed with the perfect timing of the spinning optics seen by the user is what would temporarily unlock the locked portion of the brain. This device is actually the key to a much bigger device, which enhances its power and permanently turns on the brain. The full device is the size of a room with large gears a spinning and all sorts of goodies. With the small device at the heart. So this is a work in progress. After many, many models, I've liked this one the most. I wanted something that would lay flat and could be put into a nice case that it has been fitted for. I wanted this to be something cool you might find in you grandparents old attic.

Just looked up Mr. Crawford. For a second I was saying, NOOOOO!!! After I read on, I found his machine did a completely different thing with reality and dimensions. Mine will be more like telekinesis and being able to read thoughts.

Kuma, didn't notice your post earlier. Thanks for the comment. It really is fun getting work on creative things again. Heres a small update. Added some of the optics and am playing around with what textures might be cool. Not quite yet. Still tons more to model.

Good work Sir, that's coming along nicely and already looking very impressive.
Nice use of textures and I like the redesign of the central rings section, it seems to give it a bit more character.

Can you tell us the name of the movie, or the book it is based on?

Darklight - Thanks, hopefully the added detail will help. Alastair - We have a few ideas for the title, but haven't picked a for sure one yet. My sister and I are currently working through the story. I'm the idea guy and builder, and she's the writer. Then I've got a script guy to make all scrpity like. Doctor Tracov - I was one of those lucky ones that would go to my grandparents place and they had an old barn. That barn had so much cool stuff. Steam engines, old electronics, and tons of weird mechanisms, it was pure heaven rummaging through all of it. Well here's another update.

I'm impressed, I really like it... I don't have any other critics for your work, I like the modeling, the textures used here and everything (also for the fact, that this device looks like another -egyptian- device, I've made concept art for, a while ago... So I HAVE to like it! ). So keep us updated and keep up the good work! For the final renders, remember to put some "dirt" on your textures, that will make it MORE than perfect!

Huge thanks for the incredibly genorous comments. Monk - I gaurantee nothing but will give it my best. Ramiel - You are spot on about the nescessary level of dirt required for realism. The device is also supposed to be fairly old as well. Even though it has been hiding in a box for most of its life. I would love to see your Egyptian piece. Here's a small update. Added the ring edge gear to allow for mechanical movement on each individual ring later. It took a while to figure out a nice way of getting the motion I will need later over the entire ring, but this way seems to fit nicely.

Why do my renders never come out that nice? Thats looking really good, I'm enjoying watching it come together with the refinement of concepts. Whats the average render time on these wonderful images?

It looks like a handheld CMC. ... I want one, even if it doesn't come with Jodie Foster. Beautiful renders and concept thus far. I especially like how real the optics look. Being a homebrew lazertag nut, I've seen my fair share of optics and the way they reflect/refract. Those look dead on.

This just keeps getting better and better.
May I enquire as to which software package you are using to create this wonderful piece?

Afflan - creating nice lighting is a huge part to making the renders really look good. But these renders are quick and dirty, I just used an HDRI image for the lighting and pumped up the brightness. The render for the full device probably took about 30 minutes. The up close ones took closer to an hour. Can't wait to get my 8 core mac to help that along.
Wrath - Loved he machine in Contact. I've always been intrigued by the movement of rings like that since I was a kid. Hopefully the optics will still look correct when I get the sucker moving.
Smaggers - I wanted the machine to have some sort of electrical field going on, and thought that a little Wimshurst machine would work great.
Darklight - I use Cinema 4D for all my 3D work. I've used a few different 3d apps, but C4D seems to work best for me.

I would love to see your Egyptian piece. Oops, sorry for the delay, I just missed your post the last time... This was the WIP (hence the clean textures and the mayan calendar in the "mirror"...) of the Egyptian device, it's just the top part of it...

Sadly when I click on the spoiler, the pictures won't show.
I did check out your website though. Some really great works you've done. I've actually seen most of your 3D work around the web previously. Very nice renders.

Maybe I should not post the animation, then... Absolutely you should. Wrath - Loved he machine in Contact. I've always been intrigued by the movement of rings like that since I was a kid. Have you seen the animated music video for Linkin Park's
? They also have a similar machine, but theirs is a slow moving, ponderous beast of a ring spinner. (Slower moving than even the CMC at idle) I've had this battery powered one for years... It has a 1.5" globe surrounded by about 5 or 6 rings, the outermost being about 10" in diameter. Only the outer ring is spun under battery power, and the rest move by gravity. Simple mechanism, but it doesn't have the same semi-chaotic movement that the CMC or the wonderful devices rendered in this thread would have. Soon I shall build a bigger one that has such movement. (One of many things I plan to build to take to the burn )
