Any Northern Steampunks on this forum? I was thinking about organising some manner of shindig, possibly at Bradford's 1 in 12 or maybe Sheffield or Manchester. Any takers?

I'm up for manchester. I'm lancaster based and short on cash at the moment so limited if the event is of an evening. Whereas Manchester is but a swift train away and they can be cuaght til quite late in the night.

I am looking into canal barges and old buildings to host an event but my new occupation has stolen my time while i get up to speed on the paperwork hell that is modern education Smiley

(edit) message me if you do plan a meet, i may miss the post if time pushes it down the board

Despite hailing from the Midlands, I'm fairly regular in Sheffield/Rotherham and (less frequently) Manchester, so keep me in the loop!

Felicitations Doctor When - just noticed you above me in the posts here. It's Tinker here and new to this forum although obviously you're not.  Next time you are in Sheffield/Rotherham feel free to drop by for a cuppa. See you at TORM if not before?

I live in Sheffield, so would be delighted to attend a shindig in the city of steel.  Alternatively, Manchester or Bradford is fine by me.

Because I don't get much opportunity to come on this forum, I have missed out on meets and shindigs already.  If this one gets off the ground and a date is set, please could someone PM me so I don't miss the thread.

Sheffield, Leeds...the North?!!

I have to to drive 2/3 hours South before I get to Leeds from Tyneside

Seriously though I'd love to attend, when and where is the next meet up taking place.... I've got somewhere to crash in Bingley(!) if I have enough notice...

If we just fancy a daytime meet up with something to do and then find a nice pub or tea room. what about a trip to York? I know I wrote a simular post on another thread but with the national railway museum there and some very nice pubs ect  It wouldn't work as a convention but an informal meet up would work. also depending on wether it was classed as too short notice there is the Cab-it Engineers event on the 7th-8th march This event is part of York Festival of Science and Technology 2009 and National Science Week. its offering open cab access to the locomotives and hands-on engineering and educational displays. at least thats what the site says lol

Can I suggest the Old Queen's Head in Sheffield. It is right next to the bus station and just a few hundred yards from the train station so is very easy for people to find.  There is an SF group and a roleplay group who both meet there on a Wednesday and Goths meet there later in the week so they are very "odd-friendly" if you know what I mean.
What about next Wednesday (25th)? Say 7-ish?
Any takers?
(We could sit in the other room to the SF group and allow interested parties to flit between the two Grin)

Oooh yes, what a good idea!  York's a lovely city and what's more I can walk there for absolutely no money whatsoever.

Although obviously that's a bit awkward.  Leeds is also doable, or Bradford if it's a day time jobee.

I know it's a bit of a trek away, but Whitby not only have a Museum of Victorian Science, but to get the train there I'm informed you have to take a steam locomotive.  Is that not incentive enough?

Whitby is great!!!! I love Whitby but due to the wonderfull modern rail network Roll Eyes I could get there but would only mean only getting a max of 7 hours in the town and a total of 8 hours of traveling (and that's if all the trains are running on time, which is rare)
all that for the cost of £30 so to make that  sort of trip worth while I would like there to be a good group of us that will actually go.
Where as York and Leeds are a lot more accessable to all.
If we decide to do Whitby then work allowing i'll come. but with Leeds or Bradford I could come to evening do (even if Id been at work) or a full day do.

And just to Throw another place into the mix.... If a steam train day is what we fancy well there is the Keighley and Worth Vallery Railway just down the road from me. Being the Home of ''The Railway Children'' and Brontë country (where novels such as "Wuthering Heights" and "Jane Eyre" come from.) the surounding area is lovely granted Keighley its self is less to be desired but as all you would do there is change trains then its not too bad (I should probably add in here that Keighley has a direct rail link to Leeds and Bradford), then I sugest after a days pottering about the railway and the engine sheds we would head in to leeds for a right good knees up.
It was just a thought Grin

True, true.  I imagine meeting up in Leeds/Bradford would be alot easier for most people, especially Leeds; I didn't really think Whitby would be that practical but it was worth a shot.  I really want to go Sad

I am sorry if this sounds a little bit tetchy but the problem with all of these threads is everyone keeps going on about places and "wouldn't it be nice" and "no its too far for me" and "I would prefer here instead" etc etc etc.  Well the point is nothing actually happens apart from lots of key strokes.  What it takes is for someone to suggest a time, day and place and then for people to say if they are going to attend. That's how we had a meet in Birmingham and another in Nottingham. (Thanks Mary)  Remember not everyone will be able to attend because of different factors but that's life.  It's great to get off the net sometimes and actually meet people face to face.

Lady Elsie and I will be at the Queen's Head Sheffield on Wednesday night from 7pm as we have previously said. There will be other folks there too who aren't on this forum.  Anyone else who fancies coming along is more than welcome. Please let us know if you want to come particularly if you need directions etc. We look forward to seeing you. (We chose Sheffield because there were people in Chesterfield, Sheffield, Doncaster & Barnsley interested.)

We would also be interested in attending a day in York. The format of a visit to the Steam Museum, and afternoon Tea with perhaps ending up in a bar for a meal and drinkies sounds good. A longer spell shoudl make it more worthwhile for people who have to travel.

Whitby I think is best left for WGW since it is out on a limb.

Leeds is another good location but we need someone in Leeds to take the lead (if you'll pardon the pun).

You know the problem is I used to be lethargic but now I just can't be bothered...  Smiley However please remember LIfe is too short to be boring!!! Grin

Ah, unfortunately the 25th is a show day for me and I shall be working late Sad Otherwise, Sheffield would've been lovely, and I hope there will be lots of pictures to make me jealous!

Mr Tinker, I agree wholeheartedly with your statement.....all we need is a date and place where someone will be, and then see if anyone can turn up Smiley To that end, being a mostly-Leeds resident, may I take the fore in organising such an event in that fair city? What I would suggest is a midday jaunt around the sights of the city, maybe on a Sunday sometime, with maybe some tea in the tearoom at the art gallery? If anyone plans staying overnight, there are hotels liberally scattered around, and many nice ale houses where we could go to, erm, look at the lovely architecture.....

But yes Smiley I will have a think further about this. Any suggestions on dates would be marvellous!

Yours Respectfully,
Mister Griffiths

Well done Mr Griffiths. Thank you for standing up and being counted. (Still only what I would expect of you seeing as you have travelled as have we to Birmingham and Nottingham.)

I look forward to catching up with you soon and best of luck in sorting something in Leeds.

Time Tinker, what time are you planning to stay at the Queens Head until?  The reason I ask is because Wednesday night is my partner and my Lindy Hop dance class.  However, we can get away for 9.30pm and be at the Queens Head for 9.45pm-ish.  Will plenty of people still be there?
