By the 1850s, London (UK) was beginning to suffer a rather macabre problem: No place to bury the dead. It was therefore proposed that a new Necropolis be built some 23 miles from the City; the proposed Brookwood Cemetery would have space for well over five million graves in a single layer. But how to get the bodies so far from the City? The solution was the London Necropolis Railway, originally a subsidiary of the London & Southwestern.
