From yesterday's Hack A Day: Oil Wells Done Rube-Goldberg Style: Flatrods And Jerk Lines. Dating back to the 1700s, this system remains in use today at the site of North America's very first oil wells dug in the 1850s.

PLease forgive the late reply...
the system of links and rods, etc etc is incredible!
the upkeep must be minimal, or it would have been replaced, but one wonders about the "energy loss"
over hundreds of feet of links & etc...
