OK... no-one's caught it yet other than a decades old speculation thread here. i just watched dr who: resolution and even if you're not a dr who fan, i can promise you rusty steel & gears in this, best dr who episode
ever.

The mask and gears are very steampunk, but there is something very unsteampunk about the transparent acrylic skull.

Perhaps if one were to re-consider the material as cunningly fitted industrial  blown glass, such as the nearly unbreakable corning glass?

me? not into puristeampunk (i just coined that word, and i'm keeping it!) I LIKE the acrylic. steampunk needs MORE breaking of conventions as far as i'm concerned
