A facebook post by author Jess Nevins brought this person to my attention:

Pohebits-quasho or "Iron Jacket", "Iron Shirt", etc., a Comanche medicine man and chief who wore a partial suit of old Spanish conquistador armor as protection in raids against white settlements. He was active in Texas in the early to mid 19th century; the armor was an antique even then.

A fictionalized version named "Iron Belly" appeared in the 1980 film "The Mountain Men".
