The word pagan came from paganus , who mean peasant . Its was a way to significate than christianism was the religion of the elite and paganism the one of the savage worker class.

''Trickster shows us how we trick OURSELVES. Her rampant curiosity backfires, but, then, something NEW is discovered (though usually not what She expected)! This is where creativity comes from—experiment, do something different, maybe even something forbidden, and voila! A breakthrough occurs! Ha! Ha! We are released! The world is created anew! Do something backwards, break your own traditions, the barrier breaks; destroy the world as you know it, let the new in.''

This even managed to push its way onto BBC Breakfast News today through all the political static. Its certainly an incredible achievement.

Yours,
Miranda.

Oops, sorry, quickly scanning through this earlier on I didn't look closely enough at the title and though it was to do with today's news about the first image of a black hole. Anyway... I suppose today is another step in the journey of greater understanding our universe, of which imaging galaxies is clearly a key part. The introduction of photography to astronomy revolutionised the science, and the image linked to must have been utterly revelatory at the time.

[grammarnazi]Psst: The title of the thread-->Change it to: "The first pictures of another Galaxy were taken in 1887"[/grammarnazi]

One commenter noted that the person who took the photo, Isaac Roberts , didn't know it was a galaxy. He thought is wasa nebula. It was not until 1923 that Edwin Hubble discovered it was made of millions of stars, which meant that nebula was in reality "another Milky Way."
