Diahann Carroll (born Carol Diahann Johnson; July 17, 1935 – October 4, 2019) American actress, singer, and model. She rose to prominence in some of the earliest major studio films to feature black casts, including Carmen Jones (1954) and Porgy and Bess (1959). In 1962, Carroll won a Tony Award for best actress, a first for a black woman, for her role in the Broadway musical No Strings.

Her 1968 debut in Julia, the first series on American television to star a black woman in a non-stereotypical role, was a milestone both in her career and the medium. In the 1980s she played the role of Dominique Deveraux, a mixed-race diva, in the prime time soap opera Dynasty.

Carroll was the recipient of numerous stage and screen nominations and awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress In A Television Series in 1968. She received an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for the 1974 film Claudine. She was also a breast cancer survivor and activist.

Diahann Carroll was fabulous. Julia was a great show. It was ground breaking  for a single mother and a black woman to be   a character in a strong main role.

I remember the show, mainly because my dad & I used to watch it together - didn't run for nearly long enough. She had a great set of pipes, and she was a stunner!

She was always great at Star Trek conventions, witty, informative and friendly, and always seemed to have time to chat to us attendees. (Ah, those were the days, when guests socialized with fans and didn't charge for autographs).

Marie Fredriksson, the voice behind Swedish group Roxette’s biggest hits, 'It Must Have Been Love' and 'Listen to Your Heart', has died aged 61. The Swedish star, alongside bandmate Per Gessle, achieved global success in the 1980s and 1990s with a slew of hits including 'The Look', 'Joyride', 'Spending My Time', 'Fading Like a Flower' and 'Dangerous'.

A statement from Fredriksson’s manager said the singer had died on Tuesday (local time) “following a 17-year long battle with cancer”.
The Swedish band, who sold a staggering 75 million albums worldwide, were hugely popular in Australia, where they scored three number ones, 'The Look', 'It Must Have Been Love' and 'Joyride'.
They were also frequent – and popular – visitors to our shores, last touring the country in 2015.

I did a few long-distance trips with Roxette in the CD player. One of my all time favourite bands.

Naturalist and presenter David Bellamy dies at 86

Quote
Naturalist and broadcaster David Bellamy has died aged 86, the Conservation Foundation he formed says.

London-born Bellamy, who became a household name as a TV personality, scientist and conservationist, died on Wednesday, according to the foundation.

His colleague, David Shreeve, described him as a "larger-than-life character" who "inspired a whole generation".

In later life Bellamy, who lived in County Durham, attracted criticism for dismissing global warming.

In 2004 he described it as "poppycock" - a stance which he later said cost him his TV career.

Bellamy worked as a factory worker and a plumber before embarking on his broadcasting career.
