Perhaps, I have recently wondered, that Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Dieselpunk, Clockpunk, Rockpunk, Ironpunk, and all of these different eras of "punk" should all fall under one parent genre. Timepunk. Perhaps, timepunk, or as I shortened it from my original idea of TimeTravelPunk, which I find I am more inclined to think of myself, is a revolutionary concept, or perhaps it is just a inevitability. Whose with me on the parent genre of Timepunk?

If a parent name was created, it would need to not have the word punk in it.

I think the word retro-futurism works better.

I second Atterton. Interesting concept, but the title could use some work. Retro-futurism could work, and I can't think of anything better.

The word Retro-futurism has already accrued a meaning distinct from that-which-we-label-"Steampunk".
I also dislike the word "Steampunk" (I think it is misleadingly imprecise, reductive & divisive in about equal measure)
That having been said it has reached a point of being too common a currency to be  easily changed now.

Oh yes, I didn“t invent the phrase retro-futurism. I just heard someone on here mention it.

I agree also. The word "punk" originally gave me the wrong impression of the genre; but here (at least from what I've seen) there is a whole lot more "steam" than "punk." I might even venture to say that many "Steampunks" don't even use either and rather simply stay in the time-traveler/ Victorian arena. Everyone probably already knew that, but that is my reason for liking "retro-futurism."

At the risk of reigniting an old discussion I submit to you that the parent genre can be considered Punk and that Punk subculture is largely missunderstood due to misrepresentation in the media.

To support this statement I'll point you to a couple of Wikipedia articles:

The problem there would be that all the innovations attributed to  punk by those articles predate punk by a considerable period of time. They were merely concepts expropriated by punks for their own ends.
(As was the word "Punk" if it comes to that.)

The legend 'Steampunk' is indeed misleading and is the main reason it is hard to define.
However two distinct factions have emerged.
Those who are interested in Victorian Scifi with it's aesthetic and technology ( lets call them Neo Victorian Steampunks)
And 2ndly those who stem from Cyber, Punk and Goth backgrounds who have taken their existing lifestyles combined with the DIY ethos and made it their own (Steam Punks)
The chances are both camps cross at certain points and share interests but that's my current impression.
I also don't see Steampunk as a subculture I see it as a movement as it spans so many lifestyles.

Oo! I do so love subtle and confusing nomenclature!  Steampunk and Steam Punks.  Though Steampunkpunk might be slightly more accurate.

I don't fit anywhere in that scheme.
