Myself I prefer the full turreted  version.  A  good Gothic  castle  with a shade of mystery and a touch of madness

What about dungeons or at least an oubliette?
That and a network of cellars with secret escape tunnels.

And a cackling hag somewhere in the grounds.

 That's getting into the spirit of things.  A decent headless one and with luck, a shrieker

Man eating frogs in the moat?
If it was a coastal castle, there could be 3 - 4 metre salties - no one would come near the place after the first invaders were eaten!!

{so you should be!}

Nothing remotely like a saltie where I live (way to cold), so I will have to rely on the resin meerkat in my garden, or the metal rooster!

The front property gates are my moat, and the yard gates are my portcullis - if they are shut, stay out!!

Dungeon, tower, turrets, curtain wall, moat. No drawbridge, please - I'm an introvert.

 Man the defences.  That's a grand edifice you're planning.   Here are a pair of island castles. {one is photo enhanced}

A dungeon is all very well, but only if it comes with its own torture chamber, oh and some peasants (preferably downtrodden) to keep the place neat and tidy.  Why I'd even let them into the main part of the castle to do the cleaning.

A massive banqueting hall and a dragon chained up in the caves below the dungeons...

No, no, no, Miranda! Mustn't chain up your dragon, especially in a dungeon - nice tower quarters with easy access to the open air is one of the first requirements of domesticated guard dragons!! Grin
Apart from anything else, it's cruel to chain a dragon up, especially in a dungeon!

I was thinking of keeping it keen and mean ready to fry those who might lay siege to the castle  Cheesy Besides which, up in the tower are the giant vampire bats...

Yours,
Miranda.

P.S. to honour the fact that this thread is in 'historical', I'd also suggest building on a granite outcrop to defeat undermining, and at least one side sea-facing for resupply by ship ('Longshanks' was a real b****** of a king but he certainly knew where to site his castles).

 Because one doesn't want the inconvenience of any " revolting" peasants

 As you are aware, the Brass Goggles  enthusiasts are  firm adherents to  historical correctness  and authenticity.   ; }. Castles didn't quite fit in the other categories  as its own  subject

The best castle builders were  evil  psychopath & ^$+@®€s with an eye for tactical detail.  A good expanse of cliff to  run the enemy off is an essential.

Of course you're going to need multiple cooking facilities - to heat up all that oil/pitch/Halfling Hotpot to pour on anyone attempting to storm the place.
