I stumbled upon this old article, and whilst I am sure the locals are familiar with this town, but as a foreigner I thought the article may be of interest to the rest of us non-zealanders

Oh yes! New Zealand is a steampunk  nation.   It officially became a nation as part of the British Empire  in 1840.   The country was built on steam. Trains, industrial machinery, engines,  geysers.
