Yeah, but most poets writers and painters were drunks, harlots and beggars. Mind you, Absinthe was probably a hell of a lot cheaper back then.

I love the way in which so many people revere what is effectively the drink of drunks, harlots and beggars.
Gin? Oh, absinthe... I see. It has an allure and mystique that seems to put people in touch with a past they find somehow romantic. I daresay that this what this forum is about, is it not? A celebration of a distant past, recalled through rose lensed brass goggles.

Yes. It is nice to dilute the past. Or louche it as the case may be

A second tasting of Hill's done while cleaning muskets yesterday (and I might add at this point that brass, while lovely, can take forever to clean black powder fouling from), and in the style of the times with spoon, sugar cube, et cetera, lead me to the same conclusion. Vile. I was tempted to pour it down the drain. As I sat and polished brass, the Hill's sat too. I noticed the taste seemed to improve over time. I'd conduct another experiment, but there's rum to drink instead.

Perhaps the Hills will work good for polishing the brass.

Mix it with Red Bull, if you get a particularly bad batch of absinthe. It increases the palateability immensely.

I didn't realize two wrongs actually could make a right.

oh!
I've had an absinthe lollypop - but I love gummis. Now if only Haribo made and stocked those so I could find them here.
And yikes! 85% absinthe - no water to temper it? That'll be one rough little bear.

Among the reasons is that when absinthe is properly prepared (a slow water drip) - sometimes the cloudy trails of the louche can form wing shapes in the absinthe.

And according to Oxygenee's history: Legend has it, that the inventor of the drink was Dr. Pierre Ordinaire, who in 1792, shortly after the French revolution, travelled around the Val de Travers on his faithfull horse Rocket, and produced the first commercial absinthe, initially as an all-purpose remedy or cure-all. It was nicknamed "La Fée Verte" - "The Green Fairy" - and this name stuck throughout absinthe's heyday.

Wow... this time last year I wouldn't have thought that the pricey part in an absinthe party would be the glasses and spoons... Does anyone know where they can be picked up en masse on the cheap? I reckon I'll need about eight glasses and at least three spoons, but something about spending $15-20 per glass and $8-13 per spoon strikes me as a bit unnecessarily expensive.

Authentic ones are expensive. Even replicas.
But you can get away with using a vintage parfait set (if you can find one). I saw one at our closest thrift shop going for about 15 dollars for a set of 8.
Spoons are another matter, but you can get them cheaper if you don't mind the stamped metal variety.
Also - Unless you need a tonne of them. They're still cheaper than the average cost of a couple good bottles of green stuff.

I do fear that lack of the green stuff (or lack of the brown, purple or red stuff as the case may be in England), leads to lack of the Green stuff.

I personally have a La Fee absinthe glass, liberated from my local arthouse cinema that serves absinthe. Ahh, Sweeny Todd and absinthe... heaven...

Aye, I have a La Fee glass from when I ordered one of their sample sets last year as well, but I worry about addiction running in my family (both my parents are smokers and I have a few aunts and uncles on both sides that have had problems with alcohol), so I'm trying to steer clear of drinking alone (no matter HOW tasty rum & coke is!). The problem is that one glass does not a party make...

Trust me, if you have the will power addictions do not pass over, in fact they probably are avoided by the next generation because of the fact their parents do. My parents are alcoholics, but i'm not *hic*.
