Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville is currently hosting an exhibition about the process of turning Shaun Tan's
The Lost Thing from book into short film.
The book shows a kid having gone to the seaside in a depressing industrial world where the people are there to serve the city, which exists because - erm, no-one knows, but it is not there for the people. Their whole civilisation was inspired by
Brazil, and a few other elements besides; the kid goes looking for bottle caps, and encounters a bizarre - thing. It's a creature buried in machinery, like the city, but it isn't like the city whose inhabitants exist to serve it; the thing is much more alive, therefore it doesn't belong, and the kid has to work out what to do with it.
