The company Deep Space Industries plans to launch an asteroid-mining craft, powered by steam. It will use water as the reaction mass, which is then super-heated for propulsion. The craft does also have a nice brassy colour.

And then, the inhabitants of the cosmos flew over the water a comet and become independent from Earth.

I don't remember. There was a topic that people living in space are used to it, and so could go on a long trip and not go crazy. They're just hanging in space suits overboard and admired the stars.
