Yes, she is a heroine!
We have quite a following here in the UK of bellydancers, but few of us dance this style. It is very much a niche thing, most prefer American Tribal, World Tribal, Egyptian and Turkish styles.
I love the influences of the victorian and burlesque that she uses too. There is also Arielle, Neon and Darshan to watch too.
I can no where near reach the standard of these Professionals, but i work hard to try and teach my class to experiment.

My Gracious..... Quite beautiful and seductive...and she shows quite a bit of skin on her mid-region, Scandal! :/ Behold Tempest! Bellydancing is certainly something we haven't talked about yet, as far as I can tell. Ahhhh but we have been talking about this - see the 'Help me please' in Anatomical Forum. We have been discussing integrating Steampunk styling into Bellydance and a number of us have 'admitted' to being dancers and exploring this. Tempest describes herself as Gothic Bellydance and along with others already mentioned plus Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, Katie Kay (dances with Dresden Dolls) at times express themselves within what could be seen as closely aligned with the Steampunk genre. At times very Vintage feeling, at other times more industrial/cyber orientated. 'Bellydance' is constantly evolving and is being influenced by modern movements and subcultures much as music is. We also fuse what is commonly known as bellydance with other eastern and western dance styles including Gypsy/Roma styles, Ballet, Hip Hop etc and also integrate artistic elements that inspire us and are taken from vintage photographs, sculptures, paintings etc. The standard or more traditional Middle Eastern dance community tends to frown upon this evolution and so dancers find themselves moving further away from the traditional bellydance performance opportunities and are entering into other theatrical arenas including Circus/Burlesque/Theatre. My dancer partner and I ( www.gysynoir.com.au) now describe ourselves as either Dark Cabaret or Dance Theatre as our darker theatrical explorations have introduced us into the Burlesque scene (although we do not strip but do sometimes bare our bellies) and those with Steampunk tendencies and interests are accepted here with open arms.

*dances around with GypsyGurl *
We were so totally frowned upon at a Halloween Hafla for doing something dark like Tempests.... It seems as more influences creep in the more the purists get riled up rather than excited in it's evolution.
I have been watching those early Edison films to try and get an idea of the styling to intergrate some Steampunk elements.
If only there were more of us here...*kidnaps GypsyGurl & co.*

I don't know if this is just a new style I was watching, but I was less than impressed with her dance. She used few isolatations and advanced moves. Is this the current style you were talking about? If it's a specific new dance style, it's fine; if it was supposed to incorporate traditional moves, it's lacking (in my opinion). Anyone briniging me up to date on dance styles (like the comments above) is appreciated.

Tempest is a dancer best experienced live, while her dance technique is not complex her presence on stage is lovely...she describes herself as dancing 'Gothic Bellydance' and concentrates on creating a more theatrical experience than trad Bellydance. Having said that Ariellah also dances Gothic Bellydance as her isolations and technique cannot be argued as complex.
Rachel Brice and The Indigo dance more of a Burlesque Cabaret/Tribal Bellydance blend with what I consider some Steampunk tendencies in their costuming and music choices and their technique is absolutely mindblowing! RB @ Tribal Fest in SanFran in 2006 (I was there for this and have better footage but this will give u some idea)
RB in Australia in Nov 2007
The Indigo @ TF 2007 there are 3 parts to this footage and the first two have the most applicable Steampunk stylings but the third is worth watching to see that these ladies can do trad Bellydance just as well... 1

And here is some of my duo - GypsyNoir
(older footage and incorporates elements of Gypsy with Neo-Victorian stylings)
(very dark unfortunately - but check out our fog bowls!)
(again dark but much fun! This choreo we learnt from Rachel Brice and added some of our own choreo to complete it) Enjoy!

Dear GypsyGurl,
I'm glad this thread came up, I had been thinking about starting a Steam Dance Costume thread in Anatomical. Thanks for all the dance links, I'll watch them as soon as I have time.

I agree that I find her style somewhat lacking, and even if she is not claiming traditional bellydance I'm not even seeing enough techinque that she should use the term at all. Her costuming is beautiful though, and it is entertaining if you don't get hung up on waiting for the bellydance to start.
I am glad somebody mentioned Rachel Brice and the Indigo troupe, as they completely pwn Tempest IMHO, and all my steampunk costumes have been at least partly inspired by them.

I'll second that. I have a friend that belly dances as part of a troupe and I've been educated enough where I do silly things like watching hands and foot placement while they're dancing. Less steam, but greater appreciation of technique I suppose. :-) -- TAZ

Bellydancing is definitely a very interesting style of dance! I probably wouldnt know good from bad when it comes to dancing though... as I unfortunately seem quite incapable when it comes to dance!

Wow.... Usualy dance loses me pretty quick (I only feel safe in a waltz myself take that as you will) but your dances were mesmerising. I liked all three although I could barely see the second. I can't help but want to know what sort of places you do these at and if they exist in America. I'm practically a shut in so it may be I'm just missing out but it would be nice to see quality dancing that isn't so dull I struggle to stay awake during it. Which is deffinately not a problem watching your duo in action (I feel silly using that word describing anyone who isn't a pair of superheros).

Have lots of fairer friends into ballet and various dance (I used to be a ballroom dance instructor), but no one I know who does bellydancing. I have to say though from my limited experience that I think Abney Park's dancer does far better.
Funny this gets brought up, Canada also has a large bellydancing following. California here in the States does as well, from what I'm told from my friends over there. I like a musician who uses the stage name Falik who does a lot of bellydancing music published over on Magnatunes.com and the best part of it is that you can stream their music high-quality for free on their site. Not sure if any of his music counts as steampunk though. End of long rabbit trail.

Although I'm not much of a dancer, I've briefly touched in on some sort of bellydancing (actually the "male" part of the Arabian belly dancing). But as my hips are as Norwegian as they come, a swing or a waltz is more to my liking, although, again, I'm not much of a dancer. Though some easy Arabian steps are always fun to know

Thanx for the compliment Leonard. The first one was performed in a bar/restaraunt establishment as part of 'performance eveing' organised at the end of a weekend of dance workshops...The other two were part of our debut Burlesque set we performed in a Burly Club in Sydney a few months back. And yes, apologies for the lighting - it wasn't great We do do try for 'captivation' as a part of our routines so pleased it comes across somewhat in video. Our 'formula' (for want of a better term) is a blend alternating between mesmerising and cheeky fun with a few moves/props that makes the audience do a Double-take - "Hey? Did they just do what I though they just did?" As our style has moved away from trad Bellydance we have launched ourselves into the Burlesque/Vaudeville scene and have been accepted with open arms. Burlesque encompasses more than just striptease and they often include Bellydance, Magicians, Contorionists, Hula-Hoopers, Fire performers and any other entertainment that generally involves a healthy dose of theatrics! So definitely worth checking out any Burlesque shows in your area... If looking for this style of dance look for descriptions such as Tribal Fusion, Dark Gypsy Cabaret or Burlesque crossover dance & you might just luck out on seeing something special! Having said that, as with all art formes - it is a hotpot that includes some brilliant, talented and discplined artists and others not so brilliant of course.

Very nice, and I enjoyed it very much... but not astounding. She's obivously a great dancer, though.
Despite Nurse When's appeals to my better nature (Nurse When teaches cabaret-style bellydance) I am a very keen proponent of the dark and scary Goth-influenced American Tribal Fusion style.
I shall never forget the Bellydance Superstars interpretation earlier this year, which reminded me of the "stop motion" Brides of Dracula in the 1992 "Bram Stoker's Dracula". A little tiny bit disturbing, incredibly erotic, and utterly entrancing: I don't think I blinked for the entire Gothic/Tribal/Fusion performance.
