Hey guys,
I'm wanting to spice things up a little with my steampunk attire and was hoping one of you lovely folks could help inspire me.
I have a corset and a jacket I want to keep as part of the outfit, as for the skirt, shoes and accessories, I'm pretty open to altering things. Obviously the 'cheaply as possible' option is in full effect, and cause I don't live in the US or the UK and do-it-yourself ideas are fantastic, otherwise it'll have to ship internationally.
I was running with a kind of 'madame/spy' type theme originally, but not sure if that still suits the corset and I'm looking for something different. I'm looking for something a little more....practical. Mostly practical. (AKA I'd like to be able to carry a decent sized bag around with me at events).

This is my corset:

And this is my jacket:

Any and all help is appreciated. I'm a little bit up in the air right now. Smiley

Thanks. I wasn't strictly sure what policy was on the whole links thing, despite clicking around to get a feel for the place. Glad to be a part of this community, I'm looking forward to getting to grips and seeing what I can participate and discuss. Smiley

So you would like to add items/details to these pieces of clothing?
Or you want to find all together different clothing items, new jacket/new corset, to better match a different theme?

I would decorate the corset a little more.  For example you could put something down the black binding - that is a little severe.  Remember there is never too much decoration.

Hey Drew,
I was hoping to keep these items as obviously they cost a bit and would like to continue using them.

Hey Steam Titan,
Military eh? I honestly didn't go there just because the corset is an overbust, so I thought more fashion rather than practicalities. I suppose I could throw a shirt underneath the corset to give myself that element of practicality. What do you think, pants or skirt? Or pants with bustle? I'm a little torn on all these options.

Hey Frances,

Anything you would suggest? I'm reluctant to really start throwing holes or sewing anything to the corset itself, in case I want to do this big change around again at a later date (something I will probably do) so most of my immediate ideas are out the window. I quite like the severe lines to be honest, are you suggesting a character that would not quite be so severe? In that case, who is she or what does she do as a profession? I'm interested to hear any and all ideas as I'm quite stumped right now.
As for accessories, I have quite a bit in terms of brass accessories and generally hang them off the coat and waistcoat. I usually decorate the chains a bit more, but any other 'decoration' you can think of?

I'm glad you like it Caledonian, I really like the combo, I'm just a bit stumped in the sense that I'm not immediately sure what other professions suit this combination. Any and all help is appreciated.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.
What lovely garments, Sammiannnz.

How to combine them for a mysterious lady in a steampunk world?
A killer hat, of course. That's definitely a DIY project. You'll have a lot of fun learning how to decide what style and decoration to use.

I'd stick to red and black as your basic colours, and for the metallic touch, match that gorgeous bronzey colour of the fittings of the corset.

Charity shops for lace-up boots, paint them black replace the laces with red satin ribbons.
Epaulettes for the jacket? Change the colour of the buttons to match the corset. Metallic paints and simple ageing techniques will do you proud.

Black trousers or a red and black skirt? Why not have both,  and choose according to your mood?
A black lace blouse?
Another DIY project would to make a ruffly neckpeice (jabot?)

A reticule? Another DIY project.
Hope this helps you on what promises to be a spectacular outfit!

My dear Prof. Cecily,

This certainly helps immensely, the black lace blouse certainly promises to be a project I embark on with much vigour.
What sort of character do you see these items creating? What sort of profession would she embark upon do you think?
If you don't mind me picking your brains that is.

Many thanks,
Sammi.

How about some golden colored lace lightly sewn in on top of the 2 vertical black leather strips on front?
In a style to correspond with the pattern that is already there and a color to match the chains and clasps.

I like the military idea. the jacket really works for that purpose...you could  combine it with trousers then...I don't think skirts are very usefull on the battlefield Wink
I'm not sure how pants+ bustle works out, though

Thank you so much for your kind words.
My ideas are often my own take on ideas I've come across here at Brass Goggles.  This is a most creative and generous group of steamers from around the world!

Ideas for your persona's profession?
Oh, my. The sky's the limit, once you get past the zeppelins, sky whales and air kraken.

A secret agent(consular, military), specialising in chatting up gamblers at luxurious casinos.
An art/jewelry thief.

Or simply a mysterious lady, in the style of the divine Ava Gardner in 100 Days in Peking

Have fun and be splendid!

My Dear Sammiannnz
An adventurer or explorer perhaps? What do you want to do?  Don't forget that accessories can be so useful in defining a character; is your weaponry hidden (spy) or exposed (military or adventurer).  Do you succeed in your career through guile, diplomacy, force, charm etc? If you realise that you're interested in everything then perhaps you should be thinking 'scientist' (if you wish to take over the world then 'mad scientist' .....)
And don't worry, your character can evolve and change until it feels right.
Have fun.
Regards
Cora

I'd forgotten all about the mysterious Jade (modeled on the divine Ava Gardner's role in Mogambo, of course).

How about a detective or spy character. Think female Sherlock or Irene Addler character. Accessories could Chatalaine with Lock picks and other spy equipment, Umbrella/Parasol to use as a weapon. Just a thought.

Both the coat and corset are striking, and do have a military vibe, but I agree one would not want to be bogged down in the mud of a battlefield wearing them. The image that jumps into my mind is of Angelina Jolie's character in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Of course, that is Dieselpunk rather than Steampunk, but replace the Captain Scarlet-esk flying  aircraft carrier with a steam driven battleship levitated by cavorite and your character could be its imperious commanding officer. Plenty of fun naval accoutrements to be added - insignia, telescope, a cutlass...

Yours,
Miranda.

If you like the severe black binding then do keep it.  I was thinking about flat gold braid, stick-on pearls painted gold to look like studs, character buttons that are appropriate to the theme and so on.  Also think about decorating your shoes if your skirt is ankle-length or higher.

Mistress Courcelle,

These are certainly interesting, and drive the sorts of character I am creating, but they certainly weren't the professions I had in mind. Considering diplomacy and charm being the big things, with a good helping of sheer stubbornness and willpower on the side. But the note about weaponry is a good one to bear in mind. I'll have to carefully consider my weaponry.

Cmdr. Storm, and Monty,

Both interesting concepts, although I am leading away from these sorts of character, just because the costume is something built up over time, and many items that I would love to have as part of a costume, I cannot either source, create or have on my person (a replica pistol is one. Law requires I cannot carry a replica pistol despite it not firing. Wooden and obviously not working, sure. But replica or even looks realistic, then no.)

I've been thinking on my character and have come up with a navigational officer on an airship. Not military, but still something kind of in the same vein, and I think this suits better. I agree that the outfit is not entirely suited for the military and neither are the colours (particularly the colours were something I took issue to, especially with trying to build other elements around them and not have clashes. Navy does not work with that shade of red let me tell you.)
As for the accoutrements, I have a few things in mind already, I picked up some excellent salt and pepper shakers I intend to develop into something, and they had a London coat of arms on which I was able to prise off for use in other things. God bless charity shops.
Telescope or goggles with possible loupe style lenses I'm debating on as well as maybe a raiper like sword. She's not a pirate or a monster, oh no. She prefers civilised fighting. Anyway, thank you for your help, you've certainly helped me solidify what my character should be (militray like, but not military). Smiley

Many thanks,
Sammi

Greetings fellow Antipodean.

In keeping withe the riding style coat and general theme of femme  fatal intrepid spy, howz  about considering a pleated riding skirt style [ commonly found in recycled clothing stores]  or jodhpur style pants or leggings . Corduroy pants could also look good .  A brave exploration and reconnaissance of the K markets  or house of ware  may provide you with inspiration required.  Wink

The local  david / arthur emporiums have a bounty of accessories.
