This teleplay, part of Shelly Duvall's Nightmare Classics series for Showtime, is based on the 1891 short story by Ambrose Bierce from his collection Tales of Soldiers and Civilians.

Eye of the Panther (1989) (Full Length Movie)

A second teleplay, an episode of the Sebastian Cabot-hosted Ghost Story from 1972 called "Cry of the Cat" has been most often compared to Jacques Tourneur's 1942 Cat People, but I have long thought it was more similar to Bierce's tale, and likely influenced by it if not an outright "off-the-record, loosely based" adaptation. Decide for yourself.
