Name:
Gertrude Winifred Babbage (a.k.a. "Gertie").

Age:
25 years.

Nationality:
English. Born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.

Physical appearance:
Gertrude is a petite, bespectacled woman, reaching just under 5 feet 4 inches in height, with what some may call a boyish figure. Her oval face and pale complexion, however, create a distinctly feminine air around her appearance. Her hair, falling just above mid-back, is an ash brown and often pulled into an unruly ponytail. Her thin lips are commonly pursed, as if she is concentrating, relaxed only on the very rare occasion that she smiles. When she was young, many remarked that Gertrude would've been a handsome girl were it not for her best feature - two striking eyes, the color of legume vines - being ever hidden behind her glasses. Her father, however, often stated that these famously violet eyes, the same as her mother's, make her quite smart-looking. She is most often seen donning a black wool vest atop a red or white collared shirt, suspenders, and a pair of striped trousers, haphazardly tucked into calf-high workman's boots. She carries a leather satchel around her waist. She takes great pride in never having worn a dress.

Profession:
A thief, formally. Though she is a student of many sciences, by her own design.

Biography:
The daughter of Christopher F. Babbage, a coal miner, and the late Winifred Loftus, Gertrude was born in a small cottage on the outskirts of Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. Her mother died due to complications during childbirth, leaving Gertrude in the care of her father and five brothers. As the next descendant in a line of allegedly cursed Nordic Gypsies (her mother was the grandaughter of famed Seer Olthema Loftus), Gertrude's highly unusual eye color and evident disinterest in popular female pursuits alienated her from her peers, creating an even deeper bond between her and her family. She expressed, at an early age, great interest in reading, writing, history and mechanical science. Her father, a hobbyist of technology and light, often invited her to observe as he tinkered away in his workshop with gears and wires. By the age of ten, she had read nearly every book in her father's small library. Her two eldest brothers were killed in a mining accident when Gertrude was thirteen. The third died of pneumonia a year later. As a result of these deaths, the family became ever more reclusive, and Gertrude became very close with her two remaining brothers, Oscar and Frederic.

After their father's death (details unknown) when Gertrude was nineteen, Oscar and Frederic, both miners by trade, began tinkering away in the workshop as he had done, mulling over his experiments in an attempt to decipher his mysterious efforts. Gertrude became their interpretess, relaying what she had learned through observation to further their discoveries. Three years ago, they abandoned their home in Eastwood, bound for London, where a friend had promised to arrange lodging and a meeting with a known Technocrat whose work their father had admired. Their trip was interrupted by an unusual twist of fate when the train they rode was held up by mercenaries and Gertrude was mistaken for a disguised heiress. In their attempts to prevent her capture, both Oscar and Frederic were killed. She was taken to an unknown location in Camden, but escaped before her captors could realize their error. With no family left and nowhere to call home, she took to the streets of London, carrying only a copy of her father's favorite book in a leather satchel around her waist. She stole first to keep from starving, but she's become a bit of a professional. Her desire to continue her father's work with oil and gears, as well as (of course) avenge her brothers' deaths) still burns within her like a lamplight...

Would now be a good time to jump into the RP? For I do love RPing, but I've never done so with such a large group of people, and I'm afraid the large community here overwhelms me a bit...

There is actually not very many people involved in the RP at the moment. (Lessee...six.) This RP did start as a really massive one, but by the time I got here it had shrunk and narrowed to single, easier to follow plot. You are more than welcome to jump in at any time.

If you are a bit confused, a little further up this page is a very helpful link to this game's BG Wiki page. (You only really need to read the bottom bit of the wiki page.)

Alright then!

My character:

Name : Eleanor Jane Townsend-Armistead; prefers to go by "Ella".
Age : Nineteen
Nationality (place of birth) : The East End of London
Physical appearance : Eleanor is a slight, small creature. She is very thin and not over five feet tall, with pale skin and large brown eyes. She has a small, crescent-moon shaped scar on her right temple. Her curly, honey-blonde hair is usually found tied up in a simple ponytail with a ribbon or hanging in a braid down her back. Her daily attire usually consists of a simple white blouse, vest, and skirt, with sturdy lace-up boots. Ella always carries around a notebook and pencil.
Profession / job title: Ella is currently studying to become a doctor.
Biography : Eleanor was born in a house in the East End of London, eldest child of Max and Nancy Townsend. When she was five years old, her parents died of yellow fever, and Ella was cast out into the streets. For eight years she survived by begging, stealing, and pilfering. She was sly, sneaky, and forever on the run.

When she was twelve, she met well-known London physician Dr. Jeremiah Armistead, who took pity on the poor girl. Armistead forged a friendship with Ella despite her suspicions and objections, helping her out of scrapes here and there and vouching for her character. Ella began to take a liking to the doctor, and he adopted her when she was thirteen. Upon the doctor's death when Ella was seventeen, she decided that she would become a doctor, to honour her "father" and follow in his footsteps.

Although Ella has left her life of crime behind her, her personality remains unchanged. She is sarcastic, snarky, and clever, and will always speak her mind, regardless of the consequences.

Gonna jump in, looks like fun!

Name : Lady Branwen Bastrop
Age :22
Nationality (place of birth) : Wales, British Isles
Physical appearance : Branwen is about 5"6 with dark blond hair and hazel eyes. She wears men's clothes, with a old and dusty canvas coat that she possibly found in a junk shop. She has her gun always with her, open and viewable for anyone to see. In one pocket of her coat she carries her goggles, and in another a flask of potion that she uses for healing minor wounds. She wears humongous black combat boots. She keeps her hair long but pulled away from her face and has a scar over her right eye, which makes her easy to identify (unfortunate sometimes in her line of work).
Profession / job title: Privateer/Mercenary
Biography : Branwen was born to parents of lowly ducal house- they were so poor the only thing that kept them from the poor house was their family name. When Branwen was 18, she rescued from a would-be rapist by a woman who only told her that she was a pirate on the SS Ulysses. Not long after that, she ran away from home and signed on as a cabin boy on an airship. Unconsciously Branwen searches for the woman to try and thank her properly. When she was 21 she was seized by the Russians and held captive for 6 months, during which time she received the scar over her right eye. After being set free, Branwen roams the world a changer woman, haunted by the unspeakable horror she faced, and the eyes of the woman who saved her life so many years ago.

Name: Sergeant Major Lorenz Eisenfaust, ret.

Age: 37

Nationality (place of birth) : Baden-Baden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Physical appearance :  A bear of a man, Eisenfaust stands 6’0” and weighs in at over 250 lbs.  Large meaty hands sit at the end of arms muscled through constant use kneading dough, cutting meat, and fighting.  Dark haired and dark eyes, he carries himself with a sense of pride and honor.  Curled moustaches and trimmed beard couple with hairy arms and long hair to give the impression of a beast of a man.

Profession / job title: Guerilla Epicurean, Vintner at Large, and Adventuring Victauller.
Biography: Born to a middle class land owning family, Lorenz grew up on a Schwarzvald (Black Forest) farm; raising cattle, growing fruit, and tending to various projects around the farm.  Bored with this tranquil life, Lorenz escaped into the Black forest at every opportunity to hunt, gather mushrooms, and explore the mysterious, fog ridden hills of southern Prussia.

At the age of 15, faced with a life of idyllic boredom and cow flatulence, Lorenz lied about his age and joined the newly formed Austrian army, shipping out to the front lines with a surge of new found nationalism.  Soon, Lorenz found that the forestry skills as well as abilities drilled into him by a stern father would serve the army.  Quickly promoted through the ranks, Lorenz soon was the Officer in charge of William’s victaullers.   The life was fraught with new found trials and tribulations as the unpopular war soon took its toll on the purse strings.  Forced to scavenge for even the most basic of commodities, Lorenz soon became a master at creating new recipes and vintages from otherwise strange and unusual items.

This soon became a passion.  Driven forward by the need to find newer and stranger victuals to serve the men under him, everything became a possibility for food.  While short lived, the war taught Lorenz many lessons, not the least of which was the fact that anything could be turned into a palatable foodstuff.

The war ended in August of 1866 but this was not the end of Lorenz’s career.  Joining the newly formed German army under Bismarck, Lorenz plied his passion and trade across Germany, Europe, and Turkey.  In 1884, when the Dark Continent was opened to European expansion, Lorenz retired from his position as Sergeant Major to explore the new continent as a private citizen.  It is here that new adventures and new recipes were found.  Strange spices, unusual meats, obscure cooking styles all melded to drive him forward.

Over the last four years, Eisenfaust (as he has become known) has moved from hunting party to safari, airship to galleon, constantly looking for the next great food, the newest innovation of cooking and brewing.  He has amassed a small fortune gained from savage kings and foreign potentates plying him with gifts for his services.  He is currently planning his own adventure into the wilds of the Americas and through to Cathay and the Far East.

« Reply #88 on: December 17, 2008, 10:26:34 am »

Name : Horace Bicker
Age : 24
Nationality: British
Physical appearance
Horace is a rougeish, handsome man standing at about 6'2" with an athletic build. He sports a dark brown, dreadlocked ponytail with copper and brass piping extruding from it and a finely-combed set of mutton chops. His eyes are a dark, but intense, blue color. On Horace's forehead rest a pair of ornate black and copper goggles with dark green lenses, one of which has a star with an eye in the center etched into it. His most common outfit is a black, pinstriped vest adorned with airship pilot wings from his fallen enemies, fine white shirt with a wingtip collar under which is a black-on-black paisley-patterned cravat. His pants are of the same pattern as his vest and are tucked into black, knee-high leather boots with many buckles and straps. Various criss-crossing belts and bandoliers hold ammunition for his twin blunderbuss pistols and other items necessary for a sky pirate. His tan skin is a canvas for the tattoo artist's ink, and he often rolls up his shirt sleeves to expose this.

Profession: Sky Pirate Captain, Explorer, Treasure Hunter and Purveyor of the Occult Arts

Items of Note
Twin Blunderbuss-style Pistols which Horace affectionately calls "Hex" and "Vex" Their barrels are adorned with ornate carvings of occult symbols, supposedly giving them magical and possibly unholy power.
Ornate Goggles Horace will tell anyone that the star etched into the right lense is known as an "Elder Sign" and that it protects him from all manner of "servants of dark gods."

Horace is also the captain of the airship, "HMS Malleus." It's design is essentially a pirate ship suspended from a dirigible-style balloon.

Name : Dalgranzo Gelt
Age : 21
Nationality (place of birth) : Kensil Rise, North London
Physical appearance : A tall lithe figure that doesn't betray a strong core fitness earned from working in Railway unloading yards. He appears to have a constant amount of stubble on his face. Often wearing his modified work overalls but does have some smarter attire when required.
Profession / job title (if any) Until very recently Dalgranzo worked as a regular railyard worker. Hard, and mostly honest, work. The steam trains and consignments he dealt with intrigued him. Ever curious he began snooping around some of the more interesting stuff and this led him to being fired. Currently unemployed he is looking to travel.
Biography : (optional) Born Frank Smith into a regular working class family Dalgranzo always had a thirst for knowledge and to rise up. This led to him changing his name at 15. School was dull for Dalgranzo, he struggled to concentrate and would rather be tinkering in the run down machine workshop. At 16 he was sent to tradeschool and was apprenticed to the foreman of the yard. Throughout this time he was eager to learn and partook in numerous adventures. At 18 he began working full time putting the money to his travel fund...

Thats all for now!

Name: Abraham(Abe) Inksmith

Age: 31

Nationality: Alaskan

Physical appearance: Built like a block, and topping out at 5.4. Abe Inksmith is a holdover from the days of the Neanderthal. With sloping brow and undershot jaw, ol' Abe's not winning any beauty pageants. Brown eyes stare out from a face that seems slightly off, as if the left side had been crushed and only partially repaired. From ankle to wrist Abe is covered in tattoos, skulls and women, seprents and birds, roses, ships, and demons adorn his muscled frame. And not the showy sculpture of a gymnasium physique, no, we see the primal solidity of neo-lithic standing stones. Shapeless gray trousers, and coat of the same description provides an outer shell, covering a plain laborers shirt. Leather on the feet and wool on the head, once again in that same forgettable gray.

Profession: Former Sideshow triple-threat, Wildman, Snake Handler, Tattooist.
                Traveling Tattooist.

Biography: Born of a fur trapper from Brooklyn and the last daughter of a lost Neanderthal tribe, Abe had an idyllic childhood, frolicking in the Alaskan interior with his primitive cousins, learning the oldest ways of hunting and trapping. A bitter cold winter took that away in his 13th year, leaving only himself and an aged 'thal uncle left alive come spring. They struck south out of their lost valley, not stopping until they reached Seward, where they were hired on by The Beaugan Brother's Travelling Circus, as a Wildman Act. Abe developed a strong friendship with Zeke "The Human Canvas", the shows Tattooed Man, and sideshow tattooist. Soon Zeke taught Abe the secrets of the Indelible Art. A terrible barge accident took the lives of Zeke, the Beaugan Brothers, and about 97% of the Circus. Abes uncle died shortly after, from an ulcerated stomach. Abe then signed up with The Krutzczhack Carnival Sideshow, where he learned the secrets of Snake Handling, if it has no limbs, it listens to Abe. On the day of his 29th birthday, Abe decided to go to Europe, being in Mexico City at the time, it took a few years.

Okay, here goes. Please don't crucify me for Self-Insertion. let me know if it's okay.

Full Name: Samuel Ignatius Teague.

Age: 19.

Nationality: British Colony of Australia.

Profession: erm, None. Vagabond. Writer.

Biography:

Born in the Colonies, Samuel wasn't exactly well off, but made the best of what he could. (for a chronically lethargic person, at least.) Hence, Samuel is a vagabond. Never seen without his overcoat, Gloves, notebook and hip flask ('God man, some undelightful gentleman could take them!"), He dresses well for a vagrant; the trick was, apparently, to pick a fight with the best dressed drunk gent at the Pub. he also sports a few tattoos as well.

Needless to say, Sam can fight. he has 2 knives, which he claims to be a surgeon with. (Not entirely untrue, he has used one to perform a crude Tracheotomy after a unfortunate game of badminton a few years back) Samuel loves his knives. he is, however, a proficient shot with his C96 mauser (stolen won in a dodgy game of cards) and revolvers, and is a good swordsman. He doesn't carry a sword though, finding it a little less than subtle. Finally, Samuel has a penchant for good whiskey (never seen without his flask) and cigarillos, when he can get his hands on them. He's big on writing and literature, and will often 'borrow' books that will catch his eye. He's always got a small black notebook, filled with surprisingly flourished handwriting, on subjects from combat, to philosophy, to what he'll procure for dinner that night.  He has 'acquaintances' In Europe (He probably owes them money) and a few Opium buddies in British Shanghai.

But what does Samuel fight for? His lover. She's has gone missing and the only clue he has is in Prague.  He stows away to Baie de la Seine, in France, to get to mainland Europe. Although normally quite jovial and witty, Samuel is quite willing to embrace his anger and if it leads to information on his missing lover, he will embrace methods that border on torture quite masochistically.

If there is one thing he is willing to die for, it is his loved ones.

Awesome! We don't crucify anyone for self-insertion over here. (Well, as long as they stick around.  Grin)

Currently the plot is in London (sounds redundant but it often isn't.) Where you want to come in is up to you. If you want to tie the story into the plot, you could have his lover's dissapearance connected with the Cold Ones. (The bad guys - alien creatures that control Russia.) This would give him a reason to fight alongside the Boheme.

If this makes no sense...here's the helpful wiki. (It's massive. Read the bottom.)

Nationality (place of birth) :  South Boston, Massachusetts
Physical appearance : 5'8 Greying Hair and Beard  stocky slightly scarred. blue eyes.
Profession / job title (if any) Soldier of Fortune, Pinkerton, Detective, Sharp shooter, bodyguard.
Biography : (optional)

Born in Masachusetts of Irish /Canadian parents, My father opened a woolen mill and did well to support our family. Being something of a renegade as a child , my father secured an appointment to the Virginia Military Insitute for me, feeling that the discipline of a military school for boys might instill some need structure to my life.
I did well, made freinds and pulled more than my fair share of pranks on the faculty, and also received more than my fair share of switchings for it.
My mother always said I'd end up in an institution.  Grin
And then the war came.

Of course I joined up with the Confederacy with all of my school mates.  What did I know of politics, or war. i was going off with my chums on a grand adventure.
5 years later we were broken, and I more than most.
The South was crushed. The North Victorious. But I had become a man withut a home.

Southerners did not trust me , because to them I was still a Damn Yankee.
Northeners reviled me because I had fought against the Union in a Gray uniform.

Over the years I took positions as a train guard, Bounty Hunter, Town Marshal,  Buffalo hunter, Indian Fighter, body guard, bar tender, and Poker dealer in a fancy house.
None of these jobs are near as glamourous as the dime store novels make them out to be. Lousy Pay, Miserable conditions, and no future.

Eventually I got tired of it and hired on as a soldier of fortune for the Emperor of Brazil. After a couple of years training brazilian Peones to be soldiers I moved on to Europe to try my hand at professional gambeling.
One evening an incident went horribly wrong and I had to shoot a French Gentleman who accused me of cheating at cards and then struck me with his cane.
I ran across the border to Belgium and Joined the foreign Legion under an assumed name.
6 Months later I found myself in the Son Tay Campaign.
After surviving 5 years in the Legions I took my discharge and promptly moved to England. I wanted to speak English again. Even if they had a funny accent  Wink

And that brings me here.

Beatrice was born into a wealthy upper class family, and knew from a young age that she wanted to pursue scientific study.  For most of here life, Beatrice also held a large amount of pity for less fortunate human beings.  She always thought it was practically unjust how so many starved while her own family had just about everything they wanted.  A few years after she graduated from university, her parents died, and it was not long before she sold everything she inherited and used the money to donate to charities and fund her own research.  Ever since, Beatrice has lived a very modest lifestyle and tried to focus her own experiments on things that might help humanity as a whole move forward.
