Not quite Steampunk, but may be of interest; two Georgian magicians unite to defend Britain during the Napoleonic wars. For those with access to BBC1, it starts this Sunday at 9pm BST.

Yours,
Miranda.

That does sound intriguing. I shall wait to see if  we get this one here.

You have no idea how long I've waited for this to happen. I'm not sure how long I've waited for this to happen. I'm sure it's in my reply history somewhere.
Point is, I cannot wait, I loved the book, it was funny, fantastical, weird and oftentimes quite dark. It looks like this will be fun to watch. If only I had the book with me I'd be rereading while I watched.

Rather looking forward to this; assuming I can wrest control of the remote!

Very much enjoyed the book, hoping this can live up to it...

Not quite steampunk but in a way it is. It mixes Pre-Victorian England and the art of magic as if it was a real part of English life at that time. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is on the BBC now here:

- A Four or five part series, acted well, wonderful cast and very dry and deadpan with more than just a hint of malice. An alternative past well-thought out.

You won't be able to see it if you aren't in the UK but if you are clever enough you can get round this limitation.
In the case you can't watch it I suggest you keep an eye out for a DVD from the BBC shop when it comes out.

I love it. I just wish that it was longer than seven episodes, as it is a massive book, and occasionally the action on screen feels a little hurried.

Just 7 episodes!?!?!
That's just as frustrating as waiting for Sherlock or Doctor Who only to have them been over in an instant.

That's just as frustrating as waiting for Sherlock or Doctor Who only to have them been over in an instant.

But it is 7 full BBC hours devoid of commercials and product placements.
And that's more than 3 times what most novels get when turned into films.
And it's a quality production.

I have to say I am adoring this.  So much so that buying the DVD is a dead cert (the book looks increasingly likely too).

I have to say I was pleasantly suprised that it was 7 episodes rather than the usual 3 for this sort of thing.

At least with this it's hour long episodes, rather then the more usual 45 minutes and it's a proper serial rather than a series of self contained episodes.

Overall it seems excellent so far, the costumes and props are great as is the casting, quality performances without too much chewing the scenery and the overall art direction in terms of sets, locations and lighting is superb. For me they've got the balance of period authenticity and arty weirdness just right.

Also, astonishingly, the use of digital effects is both moderate and stylish.

I am enjoying this series, even the historical fact/ magical fiction amalgamation combine well.

My only niggle, is not enough Paul Kaye so far.

Appeared in Ripper Street amoungst other things, and is, IMHO grossly underated and underused as an actor.

This week I've seen Paul Kaye in 'Jonathan Strange', 'The Interceptor' and 'Humans', all on TV now, and recently in 'Dracula Untold', the movie.
He'll be back soon in the new series of sitcom 'Friday Night Dinner' and several episodes of the next series of 'Doctor Who'.

He'll also be in the new movies 'Tomorrow' about soldiers returning from war with 'PTSD' and 'Pan' the forthcoming Peter Pan 'origin' movie.

Apart from that he doesn't seem to be very busy...  Grin
