A song came on the radio I had not heard in years . It is quite a haunting song. It has chorus with the lyrics "today is the 1st day of the rest of your life". I wanted to find t again somewhere but can't find the song or band name anywhere.
I am fairly sure it is from back in the early 80s and a British New Wave cult hit. It is along the lines of a Talk Talk or OMD sound. It is a male singer with a high voice and a lot of synth.
I tried Youtube but they had a long list of recent hip hop songs and John Denver.
All suggestions appreciated

It does sound a lot like the the one I am thinking of. But it is not the same one. The lyrics are a little different and the song is slower. The one I am thinking of is an old song Thanks for sharing , it is a good video none the less.

I could email them I guess and ask them about "that song you played a few days ago from way back in the day that goes something like....." It might have been a request.

It wasn't an easy listening station Its a rock station that occasionally plays some old classic punk and new wave. I checked that one - on the off chance they went new wave .

Is this it? "This is the first day on the rest of your life" - Terry Devine-King and Mark Long https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8r6zftMrxsEven if it isn't, this has the makings of a great mystery to it! Game = afoot

You people just don't understand or car how life affecting this conundrum is for me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'( On a lighter note this quandary has brought to the surface A. Some pretty groovy songs B. Just how many electronica tracks from the early 8s on have lyrics about the 1st day of the rest of your life Please don't stop the music. The thread has been worth it alone - if not just for hearing the tracks being posted.

And this is a bit more Steampunk (now you got me thinking whether this thread would be better "off topic"

Aaaargh! I'm trying girl, but gi'me somethin'! Throw me a bone here! I've scoured the Interwebs and gleefully sampled, OMD, The Motels, The Church, Dream Academy, Human League, Depeche Mode, A flock of seagulls, Modern English, Naked Eyes....
If it's really that Synth-poppy, then it HAS to be in the range 1981-1984

Thanks guys for your persistence and perseverance in hunting down the mystery song. This isn't the song , but it is a controversial little number with a similar sound from that era, that they wont play on the radio. For all the Cyberpunks out there

the repeated line through the song is something along the lines of "don't/ never forget - today is the 1st day of your life"

that they wont play on the radio. Why on Earth not? It was to do with the controversy surrounding the lyrical subject matter of the bombing of Hiroshima and the US bomber the "Enola Gay " involved in the bombing and the general protest nature of the song. It offended the delicate sensibilities of the powers that be. Nuclear weapons and nuclear ships were a political hot potato here and in the US at the time the song was released. We were having a general election around that time with big policy debate around nuclear armaments, testing in the Pacific and the US alliances. The US did not want reminders of the harm it was doing in the Pacific and had done in Japan. The song disappeared from the air waves. New Zealand banned US warships from our ports and protested US/ French nuclear tests in the Pacific. The Green peace ship Rainbow Warrior was blown up here by French espionage agents . 2 generations on it is still a searing memory and an explosive political debate
