Anno Domini 2000 - or - a Woman's Destiny. Steampunk Utopian Novel from 1889

 I have found a rather intriguing snippet   in a book on Jewish / New Zealand history [ Ngati Hebrews]  that mentions a  novel written by a former  Prime Minister Julius Vogel while he was recuperating from an illness in 1888 and confined to a wheelchair.   It was influenced by Jules Verne writings. It has a distinctly  Steampunk Utopian flavour. It is  available in reprints.

 "It anticipated a utopian world where women held many positions of authority, and in fact New Zealand became the first country to give women the vote, and from 1998 to 2008 continuously had a female Prime Minister, while for a short period (2005–2006) all five highest government positions (Queen, Governor-General, Prime Minister, Speaker of the House and Chief Justice) were simultaneously held by women. "

 What subject matter did Disraeli put to pen?  both Prime Ministers / authors where of Semitic descent. I wonder if this influenced their work and subject matter.

I also discovered this one recently.  It's certainly regarded as New Zealand's first work of science fiction and does indeed have steampunk elements.  The principal mode of travel between countries is by airship (but they're called something else - I wish I could remember where I left my memory).

I enjoyed it.  It's not a heavy read by any means.  The OCR job to get it into e-reader format isn't perfect , but they seldom are.

In honour of Sir Julius, New Zealand's awards for SF/fantasy/horror works (the 2015 awards were announced this Easter weekend) are named for him.
