Mr and Mrs Greyshade would like to invite you to a cocktail party at our small but pleasent condominium. We have room for 3 to 5 overnight guests as we will send our children over to grandma's for the night. We are planning a well stocked bar with a donation jar to cover expenses. About a $1 a drink suggested. The question is when?

Sounds lovely! Unfortunately I won't know about my availability until a bit closer to those dates, so I'll wait to vote.

The closer to the christmas break, the better. getting time off from college/work is a tad tricky these days.

Being as I could conceivably stumble home from your house, any time is fine with me. If it's happening in San Diego, I'm there.

It's LA I'm less flexible about.

If so many of you insist on being either very flexible or totally indecisive. May I say that I am increasingly leaning toward New Year's Eve. The most fun New Year's events seem to be house parties away from the frat boy madness of the bars, and my fellow home owners will probably tolerate a party on New Years Eve better than other nights.

Good, and is it just me or does it seem like New Year's is hideously depressing unless someone you know is throwing a good party?

Everything all right with you guys down there in SD? We had a fire in Irvine but it didn't get near UCI and it seems to be out now. I heard UCSD was evacuated, though.

Central San Diego is ok except for a hideous amount of smoke in the air. That is were Anachronist and I live. We're about two miles apart. Other's will have to speak for themselves. I'm mostly worried about the homes of many of my medieval reenactor friends. A lot of them live in the north east county. A very large number of them have been evacuated. Fortunately they have posted regularly on the yahoo groups etc we are on, so I know they personally are safe. I have a sister who has also been evacuated but so far that seems precautionary as the flames seem pretty far from her home.

nevermind that I'm reasonably away from the fire in san bernardino county, though you can see the hillside ablaze from my window Smiley

I don't know if UCSD was evacuated, but I do know classes were cancelled.

I'm okay, and thanking goodness that I smoke like a chimney. If my lungs were not already used to it, the air would be unbreathable. I think they have the fires pretty well under control now, though.

I'm up in LA but know a fair few people down in SD. If something gets officially planned for new years I may be able to attend with a few others in tow. But being new years we may get something planned for up this way as well.

Mr. Theory, it is my understanding that it is indeed planned. New Year's Eve party, at Greyshade's house.

Be there or be2.

Well as I said it depends on what gets planned up here. We shall see as the date approaches.

Allow me to clarify what is indeed planned. It is not in a converted warehouse. There will be no live performance by Abney Park, Dr Steel or anyone else. It is unlikely that women will take off their tops under the influence of ecstasy and a pounding techno beat. There will be no pounding techno beat and I would perfer it if there was no ecstasy. There will certainly be women however.

The "venue" is a small condominium that is fairly well laid out for the entertaining of small groups. There will be a "well stocked steampunk bar" with a donation jar to cover expenses. Please bring small bills. There will be a fireplace and a fire in keeping with the pleasant associations of the holidays. There will be a few beds on site for out of towners. There will be light background music. I was thinking of a mixture of blues, darkwave, and 19th century style folk, but this will vary. There may be some interesting and probably steampunk related video wallpaper. There will be cadre of well mannered local deviants and at least two gentlemen to of the postmodern DIY psuedo-Victorian persuasion. As to how many other souls of this ilk there are, time will tell. The two gentlemen above have briefly discussed the possibility of some kind of steam oriented tour of San Diego for the following morning, but this will probably depend on the degree of hangover suffering among all concerned.

Forum members are certainly invited. Indeed the chance to see some of you face to face is the inspiration for this affair. When we get a little closer to the date and people are more sure of their schedules, please RSVP through my profile. If I am fairly certain you are not a complete scoundrel (HINT a reasonable post count or other well established self representation will help) I will send you directions and contact information. Until then, I shall see you about this fine forum.

Well it seems likely that one of my friends up here in LA will be hosting a party so I will most likely not make it down for the SD shindig. While the party here will not be steampunk in theme, odds are I will be wearing my outfit since a) i love it, b) new years has always felt 'dressy' to me anyways, and c) i love it! If there are other steampunkers around the LA area that can't make it down to SD I'm going to extend an invite to my party. But I would wholeheartedly suggest making the trek down south if you can, it sounds like a rousing time!

Well.... OK if you want take ecstasy just make sure its clean high quality stuff so you don't end up dead or in a hospital. It would really make me look bad at work. The children's librarian hosting the deadly drug party just won't fly. Also should any women want to expose pleasant parts of their anatomy please do so in tasteful manner. There are many art nouveau examples of stylish female semi-nudity that could provide inspiration for your evening (un)dress. NO POUNDING TECHNO BEAT THOUGH!! It is a condo after all.

Awww, not knowing if you're going to end up dead or alive is half the fun. Sad

Being known as "the librarian who throws deadly drug parties" would be pretty badass, though. Right? Right?

I'd be a cult figure I'm sure, but I'd be stuck in a jail cell and wouldn't enjoy it. Besides which the headlines would be messy for all of us.
