I chose The Airman because it is (in my humble opinion) quite a mysterious name. In the same way one of my favourite historical characters Baron von Richtofen had "The Red Baron", it isn't actually a name, more of a title. I am halfway through manafacturing the personality behind the name:

Discharged from the Army Flying Corps after disobeying orders. Now a mercenary Bi-Plane gunner (I like the idea of Bi-Planes escorting Zeppelins). Other than that, I can't really tell you much, that would rather damage his mysterious reputation!

I have not, to the best of my slow and currently rather tired logic that is currently telling me that 12.15 in the morning is much past the gentleman's bedtime, posted on this thread since I opened my new account.

Introducing myself, Sebastian Greyfield.  I thoroughly assure you that I am bowing.

The name is one I created myself.  Sebastian because it speaks of the seas and of adventure to me.  I am a fan of the concept of flying ships as well as airships.  A great ship of the line that does not rush, but gracefully traverses the skies seeking whatever happenstance it might encounter over the next horizon.  Sebastian sounds like someone who would be on that ship, not rushing to the next big adventure lest he miss the small one on the way.

Greyfield on the other hand I simply like the sound of.

Though admittedly someone pointed out to me AFTER I fell in love with the name as a whole that it sounds rather too close to Dorian Grey.  But he [Dorian] has not yet objected to this, and if he does then we shall discuss it like gentlemen.  I shall poison his tea and he shall have me assassinated as I leave.

Simple story, my screen name my real name.

My steam-persona name is Emrys Von Atherisch. I went through a few names that I can't remember now due to my horrible memory. I came up with this one while working on a book about a world-traveling (from one world to another, that is) airship pirate. The name translates to "Immortal from another world." I'm not even sure I'm fully satisfied with it being my alternate name, but I'm holding on to it until I come across a better one.

The name of my character I've been using for quite some time (20 years since the first use in a highlander roleplaying game). It comes from the irish legendary hero CuChulainn, and the last name comes from one of his most famous episodes.

I've been lurking on that forum for a couple of years now, and have always had the wish to explore the world of steampunk, so here I am. My character is the heir of a noble family and owner of the renowned familly business (Mac Datho Armouries, Inc.). He is a wealthy dandy (renowned for his very costly parties), a bit inventor (in reality, he is only a small contributor to the very strong research & development team working for him, but don't tell him) and a bit adventurer (but not too much either) Wink

I came up with the name years ago (Mid-nineties) for a character I created for the role playing game Rifts and for the name of my wizard while playing Magic: the Gathering. Then I discovered that it is a real name. So I guess I did not really make it up and must have heard it somewhere before.
I have used "Voltin" ever since for almost every character I have created.
Two of my main passions in life are Star Wars and Steampunk which I think "Voltin" works well for both.

My real name is Victor  Smiley

I feel strangely naked, I don't have a Steam persona.

This is a very interesting thread though, with many beautifully selected names. I have a number of different names online, for different things, and have had countless over the past *thinks* almost 20 years.

I've lived quite the tragic life, having accepted that not only does one miss out on the beauty of the night its self by focusing on the dawn, but that I happen to prefer moonlight.

Lolli is a logic programing language based on fragment of linear logic, using intuitionistic implications to augment the goal. I find the preservation of justification rather than truth to be an interesting difference. I also happen to be particularly fond of lollipops, especially Cremosa Chupa Chups.

And so, my name means both the inevitable justified tragedy of the dawn crushing the night and the sweet tragic beauty of the moonlight its self.

I've never seen Emrys translated as "immortal." I usually see it translated from Welsh as "child of light" or something similar, and it is a derivative of Ambrose, Latin: Ambrosius, which can both be translated as "divine" or "immortal" depending on your sources. I guess all in all it's not that much of a stretch.  Cool

My sources may be quite wrong, I have no problem admitting that I could have come across incorrect information.

The entry I found it under was indeed "Ambrose", and it stated after a list of names that it said "are similar and have the same meaning".

"Child of light" isn't too bad though.

I am a first time poster, but frequent lurker who has decided to step out from the shadows, because I find fascinating the many different origins of the vast variety of personas and names here, and I can honestly say that I've thoroughly enjoyed perusing through the posts!

It seemed only fitting for me to take this opportunity to now introduce myself to you all.

My name is Lero Attic Professor of Androgyny at The Royal Military Academy. I train gifted, hand-picked recruits who have demonstrated their talent in the art of espionage in more advanced forms of cocealment, such as the mastery of the Gendrometer, among other such implementations.

As for the name, Lero Attic is (part of) a pseudonym of my name. I cannot, however divulge the information of what that name is, for that would reveal my true gender. I prefer to keep you guessing.  Wink

Really? I will have to listen to it! Is it perchance available anywhere on the internet? (not Youtube, communist China apparently does not approve of that - and many other - webpages!)

I'm so very sorry, but I'm not all that sure where you might be able to hear the song outside of YouTube. The artists name is Brooke Fraser, she wrote the song about a girl she met while in Rwanda on a trip she'd taken to Africa to visit children she sponsors.

Ah. I will have to remember to look it up when I get back to Denmark then! It is rare for me to find someone who has heard of the name before Smiley

Well my online persona is Grue, and I adapt it to a number of things. I've been using it for a number of things going back to when I first started hacking when I was 11.

For those of you who do not know what a grue is, you can go here. Not very original I know, but it's easier then making new personae for each new community I go to.

That said I havn't really put much thought into a more in-person steampunk persona... I'll have to do some thinking on that.

Hmm, and here's me feeling all too random and childish now with the whole "Panda" thing. . .

However, 'tis my nickname at college. My friend ended up calling me Panda after a refusal to exchange real names (don't ask) and it just stuck. So not exactly a persona. Well, not at all I suppose. . . . Hm. Indeed. . .

My username is my steampunk persona, and this is the only place I use this name at currently.

Short Version of the story behind the name:  The full name is Elizabeth Anne Sparkes. I have a certain fascination with Newfoundland English, and I have a friend online who knows it quite well. I did a bit of research into first and last names from Newfoundland, and eventually stumbled upon a list of first and last names from the Victorian Era onward. I chose Elizabeth as my persona first name, as I knew what the nickname for that would likely be. I had trouble with the last name, as none of them seemed to suit my tastes, or the tastes and personality of my persona, but finally chose Sparkes.

I chose the name Maximilian because it is a fine, older name that has regretfully fallen out of style. It carries with it a bit of old world charm, intelligence, and civility--traits that my real world persona is sadly lacking in. Libra is chosen because it is as much my horoscope as my personality, and flows well with the name. I chose the title "Gentleman Technosmith," because "Doctor" is a title best earned, not assumed, and I am not creative enough to consider myself an artisan. I can, however, recall the chivalrous rules of conduct my grandfather bestowed upon his raising of me, as well as throw a few non-working parts together to create something functional, due to a childhood full of mad science experiments. Finally, the name as a whole, Maximilian Libra, hints at "mad scientist," which is apropos, as both my father and his father, and his father's father, were all scientists and engineers, were all quite mad, and I suspect I am quietly falling in their footsteps as I am currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, and have set out to create usable items from a technically (though certainly not aesthetically) obsolete period.

I chose my name, based on my real name: Johan. The original greek form of Johan is Johannes.
I came up with the surname von Zealand when I found out what the island I live on (Sjælland in danish) is called in german: Zealand! Ta-daaah!
I chose to become "The Third" simply because I like the letter three.  Smiley

Mine is my nickname, I get confused as to wh is being spoken to if someone calls me Chris. I always answer to Strangey! I developed the name many years ago from a tattooist friend who said "you'ur a strangefish." (I used to swim long distance..) now years later that same tattooist has managed to work the words 'strange' & 'fish' into the serial numbers on the cogs & geard he's tattooing on my forearm!
