An Athanor is a self-feeding furnace used in alchemical processes, i.e. changing "lead" into "gold" - always mindful, of course, of the statement in the ancient alchemical text, the "Rosarium Philosophorum", the "Rose Garden of the Lovers of Wisdom"; "Aurum Nostrum non est Aurum Vulgarum", - "Our gold is not the common gold."

I have been fascinated with the number zero for a while; it's invention and the controversy that came with it intrigues me. However, when creating my persona, I wasn't just going to name myself Zero without getting a little creative with it. I don't remember much, but I believe I searched through the wiki page of zero. At some point, I found myself on the page for the Greek wind gods. The god of the west wind was Zephyrus, and the Italian name was Zefiro. I felt connected to the name not only because it sounded a lot like zero, but because I was born and raised in the western area of the United States, and the character I created and portray likes to travel by airship (very original, don't you think?). How I found the Italian version of the name, I'll never know. Probably pressed a wrong button.

I apologize for the lack of 19th century vocabulary. I just discovered steampunk a week ago. Grin

Zefiro, I like your choice. Being a lover of all things aerial, I highly approve of your name. It is a name with power and seems to me to be highly appropriate.

Why thank you, Sorontar. I'm glad to see approval from a veteran of the forum and a fellow sky lover. I also find your name to be quite interesting, and I must say it fits you nicely.

My real name is Jens. Jens is the Danish form of Johannes. Johannes originates from the hebrew name Yochanan. Yochanan is a shortform of Yehochanan (My last name). Yehochanan means "Yahweh is gracious". The only other hebrew name that also means that is Hananiah. If you read the bible would you know that Shadrach's hebrew name was Hananiah. If you split Hananiah up you get Hanan and Iah. Hanan means as you could have guessed "gracious". The Arabic name Hanan means "compassion". The only hebrew name meaning "compassion" is Dara. Iah was the other name of the egyptian god Toth. Iah means "moon". Shadrach means "command of Aku". Aku is the Babylonian moongod. to sum it up:
Shadrakh Daraaku Hananiah Yehochanan. All the meanings of my full name is: "command of Aku, the moongod", "wisdom", "compassion", "star", "wealthy", "moon" and "Yahweh is gracious/Gods grace".
I'm terribly sorry for the long explanation ^.Q <-Monocle.

I adore Latin and all of it's subtleties.  Noninimicus is latin for 'Not an Enemy' without concisely stating one is a friend. I don't remember where I picked it up exactly but I love the ambiguity of it.

Well, I'm VERY new to the entire concept of Steampunk... My Brother actually got me interested in it, and let me tell you; interested I AM! Anyhow, as for how I got my name: My "real-life" first name in Andrew, and I kinda wanted to keep that, and the rest (Hawk Gunnersson) was a combination of a Steampunk name generator, and some suggestions from my bro...

I read a book not too long ago called Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding and the idea of the Outflyer struck a cord with me. Why wouldn't a cautious or even a dubious airship captain want a bit of security, cover fire or scouting on thier side while in the air?
Thus my wings for hire alter ego,was born.
She's an Alabama born girl with a history, and a temper. She's been a circus attraction, a test pilot and a murderer...more recently she's been looking for work as an Outflyer, with her partner in crime, Jackdaw... who, for a plane, is rather agreeable.

I suppose my characters name was partly for the muse of heroic poetry, but also due to my love of the musical instrument of the same name. They are works of art as well as the musical backing track to all fairs, side shows and circuses. One of my favourite black and white movies of Tiny Broadwick (in 1908 at age 15, she became the first person to make a parachute jump from a hot air balloon. She made close to a thousand jumps from balloons while travelling with a carnival) was accompanied by the most amazing calliope music, and always made me incredibly happy.

And the last name is not just b/c jackdaws are super cool birds (It is quite and acrobatic flier and flocks will often chase and tumble together in flight, a bit like a dogfight) but also because when my father took me for my first flight lesson, there was a privately owned S.E.5; a biplane fighter aircraft from the First World War parked in the hanger, and I fell in love. It was called 'Jackdaw' and if i ever get enough cash, I'll have one exactly the same.

Magpie - I randomly find shiny things anywhere I go and, like most girls, adore them. It's my 'spirit animal' if you can dig things like that.
Tin - Tin snips are the only metal working tool I have to help me with my steampunk tinkering.
Plus, if I ever had an airship The Tin Magpie would totally be the name. Apologies for the absence of Victorian-lingo, I haven't gotten the hang of it yet  Embarrassed

Don't apologise, I don't think many here use it very much. I like to sometimes, but more because I grew up on late-Victorian fiction so it's semi-natural for me.

I'm a university student with an interest in history, and an ambition toward a PhD; thus, the Doctor. I've always loved the name Horace (in a historical context), and Blackwell came from this other lovely name generator. As cool as the one here on brassgoggles is, the other generator gives you 15 names at a time and they're all pretty cool.

Doctor B. "Slamin" Delanty. My original goal was to use a name generator a few times and cobble together a newer, better name from the ones it gave me. However on the first try my result was: Dr. B. Slamin Delanty, and there was no way that I could pass it up. Since then I have developed the beginnings of a back story for this adventurous doctor and rationalized that "Slamin" must be a nickname given to Dr. Delanty at some point.

Mine is rather easy actually. I just took my name, and since my steampunk impression is that of a soldier, I simply tacked on the Private First Class rank. To be honest, I was trying to be modest. There are many people who are dashing explorers, genius inventors, and daring Airship Captains, but I wanted to portray an everyday foot-slogger. The poor sap in the trenches on the receiving end of all the amazing contraptions you mad scientists are inventing. If I am in character when people talk to me, I tend to have a very negative view of technology, and tend to be rather jaded and grumpy.

If there were ever a thread where I'd stick out like a sore thumb this one must be it.   Embarrassed Hehe. Had I have thought to go to the name generator beforehand, I'd now be registered as Miss Hephzibah Chuffey. A rather fetching name, don't you think?

But instead I'm here as I am, bearing the name of the (not-my-favorite) Python sketch Crunchyfrog. It is under this name I began writing my current work in progress, which has brought my hitherto undiscovered Steampunk tendencies to the surface.

And why Crunchyfrog in the first place? Well, if it'd been Spam I doubt I'd have lasted one post on any forum. And it's a slightly wiser choice perhaps than Manwiththreebuttocks.

I like your reasoning. I think there are way too many airship captains and not enough crew.... then again, I chose to be a doctor. However, my character's backstory is not the usual "brilliant & successful victorian elite" that the Doctor title usually carries. Dr. Blackwell was actually expelled from his university and finds himself largely unemployed, on the brink of poverty.

I hope I get to RP with you at some point, I think it could make for an interesting story.

Cheers,

Unfortunately, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting another true Steampunk in person, or had the opportunity to attend any festivals or faires. I live in the heart of Coal Country here in Southeast Kentucky, and such festivities don't occur here. Yet here I am. After giving it much thought, I have elected to stay with my rarely used first name, as I feel that Steampunk is a fairly accurate reflection of myself (and I indeed think my first name is rather cool). Growing up, Seldon was my father...but being a father myself these days causes you to think differently. Nonetheless, I have yet to create an actual SP persona, but I am heavily inclined toward an everyday tinkerer/adventurer. Life is an adventure, if you truly live it. Adieu!

well having introduced myself- makes sense to introduce my persona as well...

I'd like to introduce you all to Delilah Northstar.

Not one of my better drawings, I'm afraid, but I was in a hurry... Delilah is an adventuress. She grew up on the streets and, determined to avoid ending up in the brothels, learned how to pick pockets, shoplift, and later how to play the con. She's a neutral character type - neither good nor bad- she simply does what she needs to do to survive. And if that includes saving someone's life, or leaving them for dead, so be it. She dresses and acts like a lady so she can sneak into the upper echelons of society, but can talk gutter trash with the best of them. She usually a very open and honest person, unafraid to speak her mind in any situation and is quick witted enough to keep ahead of the law and more dangerous criminals. In short, She's the lady thief.

I chose the name Delilah because it sounds dark and sultry which is in complete contrast to her actual personality, but lends an image she can portray to fool others. Northstar comes from my long time nickname and tag, Polaris. Still a bit of a work in progress. I hope to begin fleshing out her story soon.
