I've been calling myself "steelhip/s" since 1996 after my first hip replacement - I was only 27. In the following five years I had the other hip replaced, both my knees and my right wrist  surgically fused.  I'm mostly made of metal.  It was caused by a rare form of arthritis that developed when I was 12.  When I started designing websites in 2000 I called my business "steelhip design" and even though I'm now making jewellery I've kept the same name.  I think it really fits me and my interests.  The only downside to it is people assuming I'm 85.

One of the problems of being mostly metal - it takes forever to get through airport security.

Thalesia Turnblood is the name of the heroine in the Steampunk Romance I've been trying to write for ... far too long.

Usually, I go by my pen-name -- Sela Carsen. I answer to it as readily as I answer to my real name.

Mine is a family name, handed down through generations of Elementals and professors. Obviously we have to occasionally use aliases when an experiment goes wrong or child is accidently exploded during one of my scientific demonstrations- I once spent a year going by the name 'Dorothy Shuttleworth' whilst hiding out in Norwich after a particularly embarrassing indcedent when one of my steamships crashed into a local home for stray cats. Terrible business and of course, the papers had a field day. When will people understand the sacrifices that must be made in the name of science?!

PS To Professor Gallows, your name commands both fear and respect. But mostly fear. Well done.

Ouroboros has been a screenname of mine for some time now, but I've always been facinated by the symbol and the dogmas associated with it. Since I work within a Western Esoteric framework, and I've always been facinated with hermetics/gnosticism and alchemy, it fits.

Dr Deitrich Leigh Subeliast, at your service!

« Reply #734 on: January 26, 2010, 08:35:11 pm »

Deitrich - I heard the name from a film/show years ago. Cant remember the show, can still remember the name.

Leigh - The name of an old friend, and a name I always loved, even though he hated it.

Subeliast - When I used to roleplay/wargame with the Warhammer 40K stuff, I used to play Daemonhunters. I had a Daemonhost that seemed able to pull off incredible feats, on the battlefield and on the pen-and-paper-field, so I decided to name him, and found something suitable from an Eldar language site; Asharith Suith-Mure An-Istaur Subeliast. It supposedly means; "Soon Red, the Dance of Death, Then Silent Contrition". Years later, when I was designing my Sci-Fi homebrew roleplaying session, I needed a name for the inventor who came up with the FTL drive; I checked my old characters for inspiration, and there it was, staring me in the face. The Subeliast Engine allows travel, and Dr Subeliast (who would become the great-etc-etc-etc-grandfather of Deitrich) was formed.

Why it all came together; I have a terrible memory, so I'm always calling things 'Dealies'. Some friends of mine, back in the Forum RPing days, used to refer to me as Dealie. Ergo; Deitrich Leigh. De-Leigh. Dealie. Aha!

I am in the middle of designing a new comp system for myself and wanted something different then the so called norm. I happened upon Datamancer's site and fell in love with his art work. I was looking over his teknogrimoire and decided teknowitch suited me quite well.

I am a nomadic pagan, I delve into both technology and art, I design websites, Computer repairs, and on the other side of the coin I sculpt, paint, draw, build furniture out of others trash.

Hi there everybody.

Aidan is Gaelic, and means 'fire.'
Draoidhe is also Gaelic and means 'Wizard' (literally, 'Druid.')

Mac is a Scots Gaelic surname prefix which means 'Son of'

So literally, 'Fire, son of a Druid' although I stuck the Mac in there because it makes the whole thing roll off the tongue more easily.  In my head the meaning is simply, 'Fire druid.'

Cheers.  ^_^

First post, looking about for a place to introduce myself, without going on the end of thirty odd pages or having the intermnity to start a thread...oh well, 30 pages it is.

I usually just go under my real name, but that kinda seemed outta place here so I wanted something that already makes sense outside of here I suppose.

A friend of mine used to call himself Dr B, which I thought was quite cute as his name was Bevan... simple effective and kinda out there all at the same time... plus I like the fact that every "person" and their dog, in my chosen field, is going out and getting masters degrees so just going for the doctorship seems like a good way to pass go and collect the 200 dollars.

Dr K came into use for me a while back in doing a flyer for a gig I was in doing the experimental musics I'm so fond of these days. Number one is that K is the first letter of my surname and 2 the place where I gig is Kharagahape Rd, which we all call K Rd... and Dr K backwards is K Rd.

So if I add all those together I get something I believe in, has a reality cheque built in, and is somewhat in the general idea of what others are using here.

Now I must admit I'm only really here to get an idea of the way you boys and girls think as I smell a way to create a bread and butter income, which I am in dire need of, but before I explain that thats not neccessarily a bad thing I'll just post a few more images of my own stuff that I think kinda get the aesthetic and ideals that go on here and hint that my self interest may actually be enlightened self interest.

These are two microphones I'm building for an instrument featuring many other things for a performance piece tentatively titled "The Stilled Life of Remote Controlled Intercontinental Mail Dirigables"

And this is a small hybrid Tube and SS amp I've built that has many hand made items inc the cast pewter knobs.

And this is a detail photo of a single stringed instrument made from an old tellus vacuum cleaner body, a cast aluminium bowl from India and a drumhead... amongst other things, that has been electrified.

And this is a couch of sorts I made just before christmas and is basically what I do best, light gauge steelwork, or maybe not do best so mauch as quickest and with the most puch for galleries to sell... but it's all a bit outlandish for New Zealand... seemingly.

So what I'm thinking is that I can build a bunch of googles and flying hats as well as cast up a range of buttons and selling these either on Ebay or through here will allow my other works to be funded... or at least provide me with the bread and butter income I've always craved.

These are two of my blogs
http://artyone.blogtown.co.nz/
Please excuse my rather shallow view in the steampunk post, intial ponderingers and lustings after income I am.
http://artbox.blogtown.co.nz/
And this is some of the art from the past year.

I'd really just like to say that underneath what may to me seem like idle posturing on first glance is a very valid ideal as a way of viewing the world and making it an interesting place. I'm a little afraid when things do find a name for themselves and begin the task of empire building but I can see that in places like this theres still alot of the undercurrant of re-inventing going on that keeps things alive and mutating. And in that regard I don't think I'd ever term myself a Steampunk, even though I like the generality of the consensus of what that means, I think I'm allied enough to the underlying thematics to be of use to the inspirational undercurrents... or at least hope I can be.

Should do some correctios of the above but we all have faults don't ew?

Cheers, Sean K.

After a year on this board, I might explain myself a little.

About fifteen years ago I needed a new AOL screenname.  I was reading Lyonesse by Jack Vance at the time, and stole a name from an alias one of his characters used.

Dr. Fidelius.  Charlatan and Mender of Sore Knees.

I have mostly stopped using the "charlatan" part on any forum.

My favourite poet is Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

The Charge of the Light Brigade:

Half a league half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred:
'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd ?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Some one had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do & die,
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd & thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack & Russian
Reel'd from the sabre-stroke,
Shatter'd & sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse & hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death,
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wonder'd.
Honour the charge they made!
Honour the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred!

ArCh@IcStraIN comes from the roots of our evolution on into the modern world. Hello Everyone.

I spent quite some time trying to come up with just the right name that meant something to me personally. I am the type that everything has to have some secret, personal meaning. After a great deal of thought and consideration I came up with Ms B.

I like it because it has an element of mystery about it. It is not easily traced being only one letter and I am not found by any relations, living or dead. I simply am.

I am obsessed with Leonardo da Vinci. I love him, I study him, I make models of his inventions. I fancy myself, in some unknown roundabout way, descended from him (ok that's just wishful thinking). Often, when I use an alias or name something, I try to sneak a little secret reference to Leonardo in there.
Ms B refers to one of Leonardo's manuscripts - Manuscript B, which contains notes on engineering and diagrams for his flying machines. His manuscripts are abbreviated Ms.

However, if you glance at the name and assume it means something else, perhaps to do with my temperament, well, who am I to correct you?
