That is why I shortened it to The_Major although I was thinking of getting some cards made up, maybe for next year, something with a little embossing....

Funny you should ask... I've been reading this forum for about 6 months now, on and off, but decided to start posting today. I would have registered a week or two ago, but i couldn't decide on a name! Originally i was going to go with "Captain Swing". I put together a rather smashing Airship Pirate costume for halloween, and took that as my moniker, (Capt. Swing was a character in William Gibsons book "The Difference Engine") but for postings here in the forum i decided to adopt a different persona, and i wanted it to be something relevent to me.

I post on another forum, "Pirates Magazine Forum", quite regularly. I also write fiction there and have contributed a few articles to be printed in the magazine. My persona there is "Bloody Harry Hathaway", he's a gentleman privateer (circa 1700) and one of the main characters in a story i write there. I also dress out and attend a number of pirate reenactment functions every year in this persona.

Maj. Clive Hathaway is a direct descendant of Lord Harold Hathaway. More on Clive's persona and history as it comes to me, but he's definately a gentleman, albiet a roguish one, and he's definately an adventurer.

Mine, well The_Major is a shortening of what I was going to go with should anyone ask for a full title when I was out and about in Whitby, I beg forgiveness for I was at work on a night shift (Eleven Post-Meridian until Seven Ante-Meridian) and suffering some kind of delirium.

"Major Barrington Wilberforce-Smythe of Her Britannic Majesty's Second Royal Dirigible Corps, Southern African Expeditionary Regiment"

Are you a commanding officer, sir? assuming you're Naval rather than Army or a staff officer?

@ Wavewatcher, I was going with Army that had volunteered for the Dirigible Corps for if I were a Navy man I would be a Lieutenant in Command

Well Major, I'm the first person in my family not to be in the armed forces. All the way back to Colonel sutherland in the English Civil war. Still, i technically have a captaincy.

Ah, then in the grand scheme of things you would outrank myself, you being a Naval Captain rather than an Army Captain

Not at all sir, I am a Merchant captain, a captain merely by ownership, one might say.

Call this cheesy, but i often name characters that reflect or at least suit their personality or more often their background. What is their history?

My name is actually quite simple. Madame because I prefer to call people by their full names or at least Madame/Mister [insert their first names here]  and Jane is the shortened version of my middle name

Long time lurker, first post.

Dr. Wilson Montogomery, medical scientist (specializing in innovative surgery) in  Her Majestys armed forces.

"Wilson" because I adore the character in the TV-series House MD, and "Montgomery" simply because I think it sounds good + works for a persona from the upper middle class

Smythy was a character I created for my friends magazine "GUMP" and the conjecture was that he was once in the British military, now a butler.  I kicked his rank up a bit to Captain 'cause I was a Captain in the Army.  The rest was cobbled together from John Neville (Baron Munchausen), Alexander Everett (founder of Mind Dynamics) and Jack O'Halloran (Non from Superman), just to sound pretentious.

Well lessee here. I've got Tilly Catchpole, she's a clown/sometimes pickpocket. You know the people on the streets with their gimmicks - instruments, games, the people who act like statues. That's her  Grin  She can be a little sketchy and mischievous though, hence the nickname "Tilly the Terrible." I love alliteration.

I just like the name Tilly, it's kinda cute in a ragtag sort of way. Catchpole I found on the name generator. The verb "catch" makes it sound kind of energetic, like her.

Actually, no.
I haven´t seen my natural blond haircolor since my early teens, and at the moment it´s very short and black.

Not sure if I have already posted here....
But yes. There is not a really interesting story behind my persona name.
I typed my real name into a steampunk name generator, and it came up wit Cornelia Carton.
After Hallowe'en, I developed her character. She is the Captain of the pirate airship the H.M.s Isabella, a Scottish airship built in the banks of the River Clyde in Glasgow.

Is your Persona Scots too? (as well as the ship)

Mine has the name of a Scots  Lowland  Clan (Sutherland) yet he and his family are from Oxfordshire.

My persona name is... My real name! It sounds Victorian enough it made little sense to make a whole new name!

All I've added is the rank title:
My persona is Captain of Her Majesty's Ship-of-the-Line Second Rate Airship the H.M.S Vulcan, built in Bristol, patrolling the borders of the British Empire!

Sinisterly amibiguous indeed! You have -no idea- how long I wrestled with words to get the specialization to sound right. (and to allow for making a ridiculous amount of strange contraptions with a slightly medieval-lowtech medicine-feel to them. Victor Frankenstein; eat your heart out!)

Oh, and a fellow QC-reader, I assume? Most excellent Smiley
