To those on both sides of the conflict long dead and gone, I salute the sacrifices they made in the names of their homes. It is a war that set into motion the rest of the century; from Germany sending Lenin to Russia with money to spark a revolution, to Radio, Airplanes, and then the settlements after. For good or ill it was the defining moment for the 20th century. http://www.newsweek.com/world-war-1-261816In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

I trust we shall all be switching lights out and having a single lit candle at 10pm GMT this evening.

There's a new Zooniverse project to tag and classify scanned diary pages from WWI. Thought someone on here might be interested in it: https://www.zooniverse.org/project/diaries

It's interesting to note that we're still dealing with the effects of WWI today. As in, current conflicts. Without the Ottoman empire being destroyed, we wouldn't have the current conflicts in the Middle East. Without the Tsar being removed (and so, being able to complete his reforms), would Ukraine be in the situation it is now?
