I don't know why this story isn't more widely known.

 Thanks for sharing. That is an interesting mystery.
 I am wondering how  many more early adopter  inventions are  awaiting re discovery

It has been suggested that the submarine was a fake constructed and then planted in the river by diver William Deneau, who found the relic and placed it on display for profit. Since the submarine is not available for examination, we may never know.
