I know that it may be a little early yet but I would like to take this opportunity to remind my fellow steampunks to be careful when choosing presents for their children. That playful and amusing baby Kraken in the pet shop will unfortunately grow into a larger and more demanding creature, it's playfulness will turn to mischief and little Emily or Theodore may soon tire of the necessary work needed to take proper care of it. Last January several adolescent Kraken were released into canals where they amused themselves by learning how to operate the locks and disrupted barge traffic for several weeks until they were eventually humanely captured and released in the open sea. It is my sincere hope that there won't be a repeat of this 2 weeks after the presents are unwrapped this year.

And flushing them down the toilet is a definite no-no.

If you can get it in the bowl, those tentacles are bloody strong, and the little buggers know how to use them.

I have now written a short guide to the care of Kraken in the home aquarium which I am willing to distribute free of charge (small donations to the Kraken rescue trust which finds new homes for unwanted Kraken may be accepted i.e. cups of tea) at steampunks in space. It includes advice on selecting a tank, how to feed your Kraken and the use of clockwork automatons to clean the tank.

I was under the impression that Krakens were given at Halloween, particularly as our local pet shop has tentacles waving in the windows....and the doors......and the roof....and.... RUN!

It's a pet well worth having, though!
