I'm planning to make an underbust corset to go with my Laurilye costume, and I was wondering if anyone has some good patterns to work from? What I envision is not a traditional corset, per se... but... I guess a corset style top, that would go over the vest I already have.

Anyone? Thanks in advance!

     Dear Morluna,

I hear the Laughing Moon corset patterns highly recommended.  For pattern reviews, check out www.gbacg.org and go to The Great Pattern Review.  Their Buying Patterns Online section will take you to the pattern companies websites.  I hope this is useful.

I was going to make some recommendations, then realized that if you follow the link that Vienna posted, you'll hit every recommendation I would make with reviews besides. So instead I will simply endorse her advice as very good indeed.

My first question would be whether you want a waist reduction or not.  While the Laughing Moon patterns are fabulous for period corsets, they're designed as traditional compression garments with steel boning which should reduce the waist by several inches.  If you're looking for something that simply has a corset-like look, but you don't really need the reduction, I actually wouldn't recommend Laughing Moon or any of the corset patterns on the market.  It sounds like you may be looking for something more like a corselet, which gives the look and smoothness of a corset, but isn't going to cinch you in several inches.  Especially with the underbust style you're interested in, I would instead recommend Truly Victorian's TV492 (Victorian Corselets): http://trulyvictorian.com/catalog/492.html

Yep. I think this is more like what I'm looking for. But thanks for the info Vienna, I'll hang onto it and I might be able to use it for something else.

Hello Morluna! Just to let you know, I've used that pattern from Truly Victorian, it's wonderfulllll. I made part of a bustle dress with it last year and used some excess coutil to make another corset for some future use... God knows you can't have enough corsets!

I also recommend using spiral steel boning to bone it. <3
