Following my highly enjoyable stint at the Markfield Steampunk Convivial last Sunday, I was wondering if folks thought there was a market for a SP mobile in the London / Home Counties area?

I hope this is in the right section of the forum apologies if it isn't.

Interesting question.

The definition of Steampunk music seems to be largely based on the appearance of the bands in question, which suggests that there may be a place for a DJ who presents themselves in Steampunk style.

I would suggest contacting the organisers of a few events, asking if they would consider the idea.

That's how I got the Markfield gig.

I have a wide selection of artists that fall under the steampunk umbrella (as well as all the other usual mobile DJ fodder), in fact probably the widest selection of eras & genres of any mobile DJ I know (& I know a lot of them).

I was thinking more along the lines of functions, weddings, birthdays etc as opposed to SP events (although I wouldn't turn any down unless already booked for something else).

I'm already a mobile DJ by trade & was considering pushing the more alternative side of things (there are only so many times in one lifetime you can hear Dancing Queen without going crazy).  I also have large collections of Rock, Metal, Indie, Punk, Garage Punk, & Ska / Rocksteady & have covered various events for all of those genres.

I'm very much enjoying the whole musical side of SP & was considering a separate website for that side of things to run alongside our existing general parties / corporate & wedding sites.

If I may, I'd like to quote a few lines of lyrics from Half Man-Half Biscuit's 'I Went To A Wedding'

I went to a wedding
Though only the night time
I didn’t know them that well
I watched on from the margins
At the dance floor crowded

The DJ adhered to the rule of occasion
Dancing Queen
Shoop Shoop Song
You’re The One That I Want
They’re the ones that they want
He knew his trade well I could see

And then inexplicably
For reasons unfathomable
But to me wholly admirable
The DJ played us some Tallis

He yanked off The Corrs in disgust and announced Thomas Tallis
Lamentations of Jeremiah

Across an empty dancefloor I walked to commend him
And also enquire if he had any Dowland

Thr trouble with being a DJ at weddings, birthdays and other 'family orientated functions' is that you often have to play popular crap all night.

Still thinking about doing this, although not sure how to go about it short of the separate website route. Maybe just offer the SPDJ part of the equation at the moment, sticking "Steampunk" (or a sentence refering to it) in the relevant section (Our Music Collection) of our current website could get search engine hits.

As it stands at the moment my rig isn't Steampunked although I have loads of ideas about doing this including cladding my speakers & frontage. I guess this would all need to be removable due to mainstream gig commitments.

Any ideas on this front would be appreciated.

My set up at Markfield (the banner is an old one we used to use for promotional use, & is not usually there, just came in handy for covering the front as the booth wouldn't fit in at that point on the balcony).

Same basic set up doing weddings at Woburn Sculpture Gallery & Fanhams Hall (3 weeks later) with additional lighting (Pretty much how it usually looks)

The speakers are the tall thin black things & would lend themselves very well to removable cladding for a SP look

By the gods... that is a blast from the past! I saw them back in the 80s at Nottingham Students Union!

Ned's Atomic Dustbin might have been there as well!

Well there have been a few changes since my last post on the subject.

The look of my set up has changed.  Although more changes are on the cards.  For example the black faux suede is being replaced with ox blood leatherette.

& I have a new logo

The website has a lot more content on  it now & Steampunk work is beginning to come in.

I'd still welcome any opinions / thoughts on style / content of the website / FB page (if you feel like liking the page while you're there, I won't complain).

Also any ideas on further promotion of my services are also welcome.  Mainstream discos are going well, but I'd obviously like to do more Steampunk events & functions.

As it appears that the links to photos appear to have disappeared, here's a pic of my set up from the Suffolk Steampunk Spectacular earlier this year

Well, did a few Steampunk events last year & have a couple coming up this year (& the Steampunk rig is out for a vampire themed wedding next month)

Still available for bookings most months, although August is looking fairly full.

I am aware of this.  It happened during the .co.uk / .org / hosting malarkey on the forum.  They're all still on Facebook & my site.
