I looked for this but couldn't find anything like it in 11 pages  Tongue

What's the best place to get small cogs?

Would it be worth going to a watch repair shop in town and asking if they have any pots of cogs I could buy/be given?

That would be my best advice, followed by eBay.  If you only need gears for decorative purposes, repair-folk are often happy to give away pieces that look fine but are too damaged/mis-manufactured to be used.

Thrift stores that sell donated goods have a vast array of random mechanical objects which can yield numerous motors, gears, toy guns, and other interesting parts at excruciatingly reasonable prices.  In addition, your purchases there usually help fund some charity's worthy efforts.  Another possible gear source is junk yards / recycling centers.  Similar selections of interesting goodies can be found there, but what you find is less likely to be functional.

May your creative muse let you baste at length in your creative juices, so that all may fully savour your delightful creations and often call out boldly for more.

The thing about cogs and gears, especially the small cool looking ones, is that as a child I disassembles many working clocks... apparently to see how they worked (in fact I just like using the cogs and gears as spinning tops).

Regardless of my above reminiscences, I had many containers full of useful bits.  However now that I want them they are impossible to find as they appear to be buried under my "pack rat" of a Father's junk collection.  His junk collection is not remotely usefull in steampunk creations... unless a 4 litre icecream container full of toothpaste caps is useful for steampunk :-(

Decorative studs, the tip of a raygun, or small knobs for some gizmo, with a little paint and some imagination, no peice is safe from becoming part of a project.  Cheesy

Hmm, perhaps we can start up an Iron Chef spin-off (Brass Chef? Wrought Iron Chef?)

The secret ingredient is... toothpaste caps!

You never know...they might neutralize each other.

I must admit that I adore Zircher's idea of a mystery ingredient themed steampunk Wrought-Iron Chef. Love it!
