Stumbled across this today, looks like this might be a good starting off point for those of us who aren't quite up to the level of the other keyboard craftsmen this board.

Quote
The kits, which come in maple or walnut, include a USB keyboard base, a wooden plank with the beginnings of keys carved into it (the letters have already been hand-carved into each key), connectors for attaching the finished keys to the keyboard base, a saw, sandpaper and other tools.

Interesting:  I can see putting some gold or copper leaf on each of the key faces, filling in the carved keys with black ink, and then clear coating the key faces for durability.

$300!?!?  It ought to come with the brass, gauges, and possibly a fishnet-wearing typist for that much dough!

That's an incredibly reasonable price for a specialty item made of wood coming from Japan, Jake.

I do think Jake has a point about the typist. I really just want a kit that helps you put a regular one together. I am very reluctant to make a keyboard mod because I have only bad experience with taking keyboards apart... that and I would hate to feel my idea isn't my own.

But they're a full-fledged company with one of those new-fangled assembly lines and the like, aren't they?  I mean it's not terrible, but I would expect a bit, I don't know, more for that much...

Mmm, italics...

I bet for the money it doesn't even feel that well. Keyboards have to feel good as well as look good. I would think Japan it would be 300 dollars for shipping not for the product.

Feh.

Look at the spacing on the keys...  OKAY...I see now that's just the pieces you cut out.   But still....

I'd hate typing on it and I'm by far NOT a touch typist.

And for $300...I want a color matched USB cable...at least not WHITE.  Sheesh.   Time to get the shop cleaned out I see and get to work on my own.

Or at least a cloth covered USB cable. I personally agree with Jake. For $300 USD you can make a better looking board your self. Shoot you could even pick out the wood you want. Oak, Walnut, Cherry, or even some nicely aged Teak.

Well I hope they sell a ton of them so that they can move on to their next project, and leave keyboard mods to the pros.

To me, it looks as if they are using a mac style keyboard as the base and in my opinion those just aren't that comfortable.

Construction materials aside, the design feel just a little too similiar what one could walk into any computer store and buy off the shelf. $300 may be a good price considering the workmanship and materials (which both seem top-notch) but for that money I also want excellent design, which I am not seeing.

Honestly, I'd rather find a keyboard that I like and modify it.

The more I've thought about it...the less a deal this is.  I believe I saw the completed version goes for ~$450-ish.  Which is steep, but all the work has been done for you.  At $300 the company is just dropping the raw bits in a box and letting YOU screw up the part of putting it together.  The Key blanks themselves are surely done on a CNC machine.

And I have a friend who is taking delivery of just such a CNC machine for his shop soon

Those keys totally look like Scrabble tiles, why not just glue some tiles to the keys of a regular keyboard?  Dangit, computers are so ugly, why are they so ugly?   Sad  Ugly computers are the kind of thing that drives one to steampunkery.  Which maybe isn't such a bad thing...

The letters are hand carved, I'm not sure about the blanks themselves.  But, that stands to reason if they want any precision at all.
