It's not as heavy as you might think. It's all hollow.
I took the innards from the extinguishers which contain lead cast parts.

It now weighs exactly 3.1Kg. Just over 6lbs.

It does look extremely heavy though.  I hope that you have somewhere good to wear it.

Some work in progress of my 'Air Kraken' plasma pulse jet-pack!

Fire extinguishers, old Mysto pesticide sprayer, brass vases, car horns and plumbing parts... The next part will be making the harness...

I have not built anything in a while - but on seeing this masterpiece I am inspired to get back to tinkering.

I am calling it, I know it is only April but this is the contender for RPOTY 2013.

I am left curious what your jaw is composed of that it makes that noise when hitting the floor.

Today I started work on a rocket pack.  Not much to it yet, just plastic bottles and cardboard glued together, but all of the large shapes that will be needed are there.  I'm predicting another twelve or so hours of work on it before it really starts looking like more than a heap of plastic bottles.

Well done sir, good to hear another rocket pack is underway.

Meanwhile - yesterday I purchased a genuine WW2 pair of airman's goggles to add to my flight kit.

Here’s more progress on the ‘Airkraken Mk I’. http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,29912.msg848334.html#msg848334

This is the harness assembly. The mainstay is a 2mm thick mild steel plate which was cut to shape, and drilled. Then I covered it in leather and added the brass eyelets.

Fastening straps were cut, edges skived, oiled and applied to the plate. The brass decorations at the front are old door appliqués riveted to the leather. The shoulder straps are connected to two brass ‘Sam Browne’ studs on the waist belt.

The whole thing will now be screwed to the jetpack itself... more pics to follow when complete!

That looks really great, a beautiful job.

Maybe you can answer a question for me? The studs at the bottom of the front straps, what are they called? I've wanted to get some for ages but I don't know what to look for.

I've always known them as Sam Browne fasteners. I got mine here

Man, that is going to be a very nice jet pack.  I like the harness, always thought leather work in SP was gorgeous.

I was able to do a bit of work on my pack tonight, it is still very rough but coming along.  Here is a photo of the test fit for a secondary burn fuel injector and air intake valve for the main booster.  There will be six fuel injectors and five air intakes on the main booster when all is said and done.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And here is the main booster sitting in about the correct position atop the fuel tank assembly armature

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Tomorrow I'm going to try to get all the major parts added to the main booster and start fleshing out the fuel tank assembly.  I have yet to start on the directional thrusters, and the whole thing will need skinned (most likely in paper mache), detailed, and painted.  But it is coming along.

I love it. I used pop bottles in both my son's and daughter's packs, and they work really well.

I don't know if you've considered this, but I found filling the bottles with self expanding builders foam really helps to strengthen them, making them a lot easier to work with and lot more robust.

Have you tried painting the inside of the bottle and then adding the foam? I have wondered if the solvents in the foam would affect the paint.... I figure the paint inside the bottle will be more durable. Maybe sunday.... I have a small bottle painted and ready to test...

I had thought about that but the bottles I am using are pretty robust as is and I don't think they will need the foam.  The build is coming right along, by the end of Sunday I hope to be ready for painting, finally assembly, and adding the greebles.

Are those gatorade bottles?  If so, I found they have little dimples that pick up a dry brush excellently.

Yes they are gatorade bottles, I'm hoping with a proper paint job the finished product looks like more than just the sum of it's parts.

I posted these in another thread, but I seem to recall someone mentioning rocket boots in this one. These are made from CO2 canisters for bike pumps and airguns, used as part of a modular accessory set I'm working on for the missus.

I'm planning on making another set or two, a little more elaborate next time (these were knocked up in an hour).

Probably about finished now, I reckon.
