Hmm, anyone in Brisbane know of some decent second hand/junk shops, or any other places where one might scrounge up some useful bits and pieces?

The Caboolture flea markets are pretty cool for finding heaps of random stuff.  If you can make it up to Mt Tamborine there's a great junk shop that fills a couple of sheds then spill out into the yard, they have everything and it's well worth a look.  Otherwise I have no particular favourites, I just shop around heaps.

I don't actually live all that far from Mt Tambourine (well, okay, so it's not exactly somewhere I go, but I could conceivably get there) - I don't suppose you know the address of this place?

I'm afraid not sorry.  It's up the top, where there's all the tea houses etc.  But I was taken by a friend who just stumbled on to it one day.  I'll ask him if he has any idea what the address is.

The Annerly antique shops.  Sometimes pricy but it's where I found a lot of my REALLY good bits.  Quality.

Does anyone know good sources for men's victorian-era costumes around here?

Gallery Serpentine has a shop on Enmore Road with both men's and ladies' outfits.

Gallery Serpentine is too gothic for me. But they did point me towards the most wonderful place: A little shop called "Anton's" in the Skygarden near Centrepoint. Oh my. Words fail me. If only I had a spare grand or two...

May I ask the same thing with regard to Sydney? Good places for junk?

Would that be the place with all the cuff-links, and canes, and smoking jackets?
Oh, MY yes!

And vests, cravats, tails... yes indeed.

Apparently they also have a Melbourne store for those of a southern extraction.

Hi, I'm new here. I'm in Hobart.

I never expected to see a steampunk themed exhibition here, but yesterday I went to see this: http://www.castgallery.org/exhibition/current.htm#infiniteempire

Some of it was a bit more Goth than Steampunk (according to my definition) but I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if its a touring exhibition or not.

I do a bit of work in brass and other metals so in time I'll post some stuff up here.

Ah! Another in Hobart already? Welcome Charlie! I have little doubt that, this being the serendipity city that it is, we shall run into eachother with all haste. Unless...You've never been to a club called The Coven, have you? Regardless, I'll be the one with incredible ammonts of purple.

Hi just thought I would say I'm from Victoria, which takes the number of Victorians on here up to about 3 or so unless I am wrong.

Thanks George, No doubt we'll run into each other eventually. I've never heard of The Coven, doesn't really sound like my thing, but I'll keep my eye out for incredible amounts of purple!

I'd just like to draw the attention of Brisbane steampunks to a mens hairdressing place in Creek Street in the City - awesomely Victorian/steampunky. I'm pretty sure it was called 'Boggarts' or something like that - walking past it almost made me want to get my hair cut just to get a closer look at some of the stuff they have on their walls Smiley

Bogarts.  My boy goes there when I make his appointments (as he is a busy tinkerer and doesn't have the time himself!!) and I often wish I could myself.  I adore the place.

Also, don't get a haircut.. get a shave!  I hear it's fabulous and warm and nice towels and just... the perfect way to pamper a gentleman.

So I finally got to visit Anton's in Melbourne in December. I came away with:

1. A dress shirt
2. A cravat
3. A gold paisley vest
4. A red velvet smoking jacket
5. A frock coat and pants (with braces) on the way
6. Considerable less money than I had before

Oooh, it's all soooo beautiful. Now I just have to find an opportunity to wear it all (and cooler weather so that I don't swelter to death).

Hello there! New member ahoy.

Add my name to the already impressive amount of Queenslander-dwellers  Smiley

I gather there is quite a decent Steampunk following in QLD? I was starting to feel a wee bit lonely... however, I'm not in Brisbane (but quite close to), so that may be part of the issue.

Anyway, always a pleasure to find like-minded persons so close to home!

I live in Townsville. Apart from the TDSME fun park and a few displays at shows nothing really steamy ever seems to happen around here.

We had a railway workshop in Flinders street but it hasn't operated for 20 years, and is soon to be levelled (as soon as the developers organise the asbestos disposal experts.) I was expecting the old signal box to be gone by now but it's still there.

There is Victoria bridge but don't go there after dark.

Nah, Victoria Bridge is fine so long as you're not a fool about it.  I'm an ex-Townsville boy, have to admit I got straight out to Bris as soon as I could.

*Whispers* You don't actually buy stuff from Anton's, you just go in there for inspiration!

Also, what on earth happened to their selection for ladies? It is all horrible now.

*Laughs* I can't go into Anton's at Skygarden any more: the man recognises me (and more particularly, my young man) every time. Not that I mind. Like I said: women's stuff has all turned ugly.
